Thanks for that

I'll send you a PM, I've decide to keep it as a hobby so I'm doing it for the fun of it, non profit style, so if you cover the cost of the parts and postage I'll make one no problem.

Just finished this dulcimer guitar for a hippy chick. VW van, flowers and flower shaped sound holes, angled headstock, 3 string...

Oh wow! That's so cool! It doesn't sound too bad either. Would you be willing to build one for somebody else as well? How much would you charge?

Just seen the above art work in the flesh and it truly is a lovingly crafted instrument.

Excellent work sir.

I've been following this thread for a while and really like the latest one's you have been making.

Can I ask; the boxes for the Beatles, Pink Floyd and VW ones are they all Cigar boxes or are they boxes you have made.

Also the wood burning pen you have, what kind is it?

TIA

H

Hi Harold

They are just standard cigar boxes that I've sanded the labels off. The wood burner I use is this one and it's perfectly adequate for what I do.

Nice one Harold. Looks great, how does it sound? How was the workshop? And how was the great man himself? I've had a fair bit of advice from John through Cigar Box Nation and he even advised me on what resonator to buy recently, top bloke.

I don't play but it sounds pretty good to me. Workshop was good, John's a top bloke plenty of advise on building.

I'm more interested in the building and the workshop given me the confidence to build my own.

Hi Clarkyboy, quick question on the necks. I've tried our local timber merchant for some offcuts but have been put off by the price, what kind of dimensions do you normally use particularly the length ? Also what types of wood do you use, I've seen sapele mentioned a few times.

I've got the rest of the bits needed to make a couple of cbg's, might have a go at doing a ukulele for my daughter as well

Hey Carlito

Yeah I tried my local one too and the prices were shocking but got another in the pipeline who seems more into selling offcuts and making up a reasonable price.

I've only bought from ebay so far though and it's been hit and miss, my recent ones have been good and about £4 something per piece, over a metre in length and 45mm wide. I reckon anything between 35-45 mm wide is pretty good. This timber is easy to work with and quite sturdy, I'd prefer to find something a bit thicker though, 20mm is the minimum thickness I'd use...

I'm still experimenting though, I'm hoping to get a bunch of different hardwoods and try them out. A lot of people use old table legs and stuff, all part of the fun.

My local merchant sells poplar 1x2 in metre lengths for about £2.50 most expensive is walnut/cherry at £6

I'm working on a poplar neck and cutting the head stock has been an experience having the correct tools helps.

I may go to a softwood next just for the ease of cutting and shaping

Cheers fellas I got a quote from a seller on ebay who can do lengths of various hardwoods for around £2.50-£3.00, postage will be a tenner but I figure I might get 10 lengths to start so not too bad when spread over that amount.

Local timber merchant wanted a tenner a length for sapele or oak!

Yeah a place near me was quoting labour costs as well, jeez I only need off cuts or scrap.

I'm taking my time with them this year, last year I made 40 guitars which is too many. I've got one outstanding custom job to do and then I'll just take it from there. Got all the stuff ready to make an oil can guitar so that will be my next project.

That's awesome well done. I'm a big Breaking Bad fan too. Did you do it in permanent marker?
