Latest jobbie...3 string electric made from a Dunhill cigar box...

I think I'll stop updating this thread now, it's bound to be getting boring. Cheers for the comments though

Nice one, hope you have fun making it. It's all good even if it goes horribly wrong, and I've messed up plenty of them.

Made this for a mate's dad as a retirement gift. It's got his name, workplace and dates of work on the back burned on but I'll not show that. He's an Eagles fan and he was an engineer so I put cogs up the neck.

And they keep coming. This is an acoustic dulcimer stick. It is diatonically fretted which means it has the sharp and flat notes removed, so it's just the major notes which means anyone can make this sound good, because there are no wrong notes. It is short scale, and is tuned G D G using the three GBE strings.

Thanks NicolaUK

Got a couple more commissions coming up, I keep selling them at cost price much to my wife's dismay. Maybe I should charge something for the work I put into them.

Ebay is a non-starter in that respect. It costs around 10% altogether in fees, which is a huge portion if you sell it cheap. It's only ebay making money from it.

Started making a wider headstock to mix things up. Also started making my own bridges. I make them out of pen blanks, this one is American walnut, it makes it sound just like a banjo. This is the prototype, you can see a few extra screw holes where I messed up

Stop being shy. If you were a 'real' business, you would need to start thinking about a proper mark-up. You don't think iPhones cost £500 to make, do you?

When you buy something in a shop, there's a good chance 10% of the profit on that is being creamed off by the landlord. Handcrafted 'luxury' item? I wouldn't bother unless I was making anything from 40-70%.

I'm still at the stage where I'm happy to get my money back and learn a craft. I seem to have one custom job at a time which suits me fine, it gives me time to work on new things and hopefully make a decent job of it. I think if I get really good at it, I'll start making less of them and charging more. I think I make about 3 a month at the minute which is a lot when you do it in your spare time.

I also hate charging people money. I am shy

They also have a limited intrinsic value, so the price could hardly reflect the actual time in crafting them. Basically the other end of the scale to a handmade violin or guitar where you can genuinely charge what you want and someone will pay it.

Exactly. Also as my wife says it's a very niche market. I usually appeal to people who are looking for a gift and the person in question pretty much has everything. I can only think of one guy who's cbgs are in big demand in the UK and he only charges around £200-£300 for a top notch guitar and that's Chickenbone John. If anyone is looking for the Rolls Royce of cbg get one from him, but you'll have a bit of a wait for it. Top guy though, he's given me tonnes of advice.

Finished a 4 string electric Pink Floyd guitar for someone...

I've since added a few screws at the back to secure the neck a bit more. I'm also thinking of swapping the walnut bridge for a screw.

Been following this thread for a while and I am constanly impressed with the work you are churning out. What sort of price are you charging for commissions ? Got my old man's 70th coming up and would love to get him a one off item like this. Keep up the good work and keep posting the pictures !
