I think you are bang on. There's not a huge margin in making and selling a straight forward cigar box guitar, but doing something out of the ordinary might be the way to go. The Bourbon biscuit one gets the most attention and it was just an experiment.

Got loads of people asking me to make them one now so there is interest. Maybe sometime in the future I'll do it full time.

You'd make a killing on custom jobs. Imagine a KISS themed one?, but then maybe issues with copyright may come in?

If you do go full time i'd happily pay for one for a Christmas present for someone. I think you do a fantastic job and it's a real niche product that you don't often see.

Cheers, that means a lot. I'll put details up somewhere if it takes off (obviously within forum regulations)

I made this little acoustic 3 string from a wine carrier we had lying around, only cost a few pound to make...

I quite like making guitars out of funny looking boxes I find, just made this one. The fret inlays are washers I burned and aged to go with the look of the box, same with the screws for the bridge and nut. The neck is made from iroko wood.

I'm liking your skull and crossbones one above. Very nice.

Have you ever thought about doing one as a "pack of cards" box? You could have the back-of-card pattern for the main soundbox and the 1, 3, 5, etc fret inlays being the suit symbols. That would look quite good IMO.

Yeah there's some great neck decals that have the suit symbols all the way up the neck. That skull one was meant to have a single coil pickup too with skull knobs for volume and tone but it didn't suit the box in the end. I'm going to get into wood carving and see if I can maybe do a bit of wood burning too, could come up with some good custom stuff if I'm any good at it.

Sweet tin 3 stringer. I bought a wood burning pen, so the frets are burnt in and so are the numbered fret markers...

So I'm getting into this pyrography lark (not pornography). My latest has a bit of wood burning art on it, and a rod piezo which is amazingly better sounding that a disc piezo pickup...

And vid demo thingy...

It's tuned E - B - E (open E). Most of mine are open G (G - D - G) so I like to vary it. Gives you a power chord all the way up the neck. Nice and easy to learn on.

Good question! I've got a pile in the shed, a pile in my bedroom, some on the walls, and I've made a few for friends. Am thinking maybe the next time I see a craft fair or something similar I'll maybe have a go and take a stock along, see what happens. I could get off my backside and try ebay too.
