I just finished the dog bowl resonator over the weekend. I couldn't fit a pickup in it due to their being a lot of stuff inside the box, so it's just acoustic.

Thanks Nutter, it's got a slight sitar sound to it, but it isn't as loud as I would have liked. It sounds pretty nice though.

I made this for my daughter's 16th next week, she's mad about him whoever he is

I've come up with a new way of making it louder acoustically on the inside and it works. This one is really loud, and has a proper banjo twang.

I've burned an inscription onto the back too.

You ever considered making a cigar box Uke Clarkyboy ? My daughter is getting to be a pretty good uke player but my first attempts at making an 3 string guitar show I should never be allowed to attempt frets! Something with Aquila strings should sound pretty nice I reckon, it's her birthday In a couple of weeks, fancy a project ?

I've never even played a Ukelele. I'd probably want to buy one first to get familiar with it before making one. I'm working on a guitar for my other daughter's birthday just now.

Another guitar for my eldest daughter this time...

They are getting a bit samey so I'll have to do something different with the next one.

I finished only my second ever oil can guitar last night. 3 string electric, sounds loud acoustic and pretty sweet plugged in. I've put in abalone dot inlays this time, which were easy peasy to do.

Thanks Nutter. I reckon it cost just under £30 to make. Not sure what's next, maybe more complicated electrics. All these ones have is a rod piezo pickup wired to a 1/4 jack. Some folk make their own amps out of cigar boxes so might have a go at that too.

Nah I've really slowed down and tried to make better ones, I've not really got any plans to sell them. If someone asks me to make one I just charge them the cost of the parts.

I've knackered my right arm so I'll be taking it easy over winter until it's better.

Fantastic effort on the oil can. If you do decide to sell this one I would definitely be interested. Would save me keep borrowing the one you did for my dad !

I love playing guitar yet I can't imagine the satisfaction you must get from playing an instrument you've crafted yourself - I bet it's a thrill.

Great work man, sounds and looks fantastic.

Sounds amazing mate good job, any chance you can give me a bit of advise on neck's ? I've had the other bits required for ages now (but no time!) I have tried a couple of local suppliers for the timber but all have given me daft prices. I emailed a guy on ebay and he came back to me with the following :

900MM X 50MMX 25MM PLANED
SAPELE
ASH
OAK
BEECH
IDIGBO
ALL THE SAME PRICE AT UPTO 5 £2.75
5 TO 10 £2.50
ABOVE 20 TO 40 AT £2.25
POST IS £11 FOR UPTO 25KGS FOR WHICH YOU SHOULD GET 30 OR ABOVE

Does the size seem ok to you and what type of wood do you recommend ? Did a lot of reading before but have totally forgotten it all now.....

How do you tune them? Top three guitar strings (GBE)?

This one is G - D - G using the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings A - D - G and tuning the A string to a G to produce an open tuning. There are plenty other ways to do it too.

I can only go by what I've used, and I've used Iroko which is great to work with, but I think almost any hardwood will do. This seems to suggest oak, maple and ash...

http://www.cigarboxguitarparts.com/c...x-guitar-neck/

The width of my pieces has been 45mm so 50mm should be fine, mine have been 25mm thickness and I wouldn't go any thinner, you don't want the neck to bend. 900mm lengths would be fine I reckon. Seems a good price too
