Finished the paperback last night, didn't feel like Stephen King book for some reason. Very good though.

about half way through and enjoying it so far - in my minds eye, i see Big Jim Rennie as being the colonel from Akira!

Discredited hero reluctantly taking charge as disaster worsens ? Check. Power-crazed nutjob in charge of (small Maine) town ? Check. Couple of sassy no take ******* broads with smart tongues ? Check. God-bothering psycho on periphery ? Check. Use of italics to denote viewpoint character's worries ? Check.

200 pages in, bubbling up nicely.

(Very cool cover design/s on the paperback, by the way.)

Enjoyed this quite a bit, not a patch on The Stand though.

I wasn't completely enamoured by the conclusion, but a good quick-ish read (considering the size of this tome.)

It's too long.

It's eminently readable and pretty good fun. But ... there is some typical King clumisness, without which it could have been richer and more satisfying. Some of the language is messy and suffers from his usual over-detailing of trivial elements. Characters are sketched a bit thin; he can't decide whether to offer physical descriptions or not, which is a bit lazy. The mystery, when revealed, is a bit crap isn't it ? And it's too long. It's doesn't, in the end, tell nearly enough story to fill 900 pages.

That said, some of the punch-the-air set pieces are smartly choreographed. Fun, in parts, but not as fulfilling as 'Lisey's Story'.

By the way, King's new one is out soon.
Full Dark, No Stars.
Four very dark tales, similar to Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight by the sounds of it. Getting good reviews.

£7.60 at Amazon

I'm around 3/4 the way through Under the Dome. It's been pretty good so far. Feels a bit 'small scale' considering what is going on and the size of the book.

If they do an adaptation I hope Sam Trammell plays Dale Barbara. That is who I'm seeing when I read it.

Not keen on the UK cover of Full Dark. Much prefer the US one. Seriously considering reading Blockade Billy next. I got the LE (with King baseball card) and slipcase from Cemetery Dance.

I just finished it today. It goes a bit flat at the end.

Still an entertaining read though.

What next I wonder... I fancy giving Cujo another read. It's been years.

The upcoming tv mini-series has the potential to be very good. It's to be on Showtime which means it wont be watered-down, it has Speilberg as a producer so production values should be high & best of all, it's just been announced that comicbook writing genius, Brian K. Vaughan is writing it.

Desperation is good, if you haven't read it. Rose Madder is underrated too.

Just read that channel 5 has bought the U. S. tv series to show this autumn (shown in U.S. 24th June).

I've tried to get into this but got stuck about a third of the way through, I may have another go in preparation to see what the translation to tv is like.
