It's great fun, lots of things going with variable abilities and bonus cards, and a large element of take that, in a similar vein to Survive. The board and components are awesome, highly recommend it.
Black Fleet is neat and looks great. It's also easy to learn, but ultimately very lightweight. We've played it 3 or 4 times, but it's not the most requested by the kids. I like it though.

We played a few games of "A fake artist goes to New York" this weekend. That went down a treat. It's also one of the simplest game ever. But such a laugh. Also, guessing who is the fake artist is not always as easy as it looks.

The only problem is that you need 5 to 10 players to play it. So not one for small families.

Stone Age and Splendor over half term. Both went down really well with new players, Splendor especially.

It took a few rounds to get people to understand what constituted a 'good move' in Stone Age so it took a while to get going, but all good in the end, it's a great game.

So, we got to play Captain Sonar on Sunday.

The game turned out every bit as good as it seems to be in the reviews. We finished the first game, talked excitedly about the hunt and dove right back into a second one with shuffled crews. Good times.

There were 7 of us playing and I think a group of 6 is pretty much perfect, unless 2 in the group prefer a stress free experience focused more on coordination (i.e. want to play the First Mate, like my youngest did). In that case, 8 is awesome too.

I was worried before the game that it would be too stressful, frantic or devolve into an unintelligible shouting match. But the game is cleverly designed. It imposes a rhythm that's steady, rather than frantic (with the sequence of 1 order, 2 acknowledgements). And yet, there are times when you are closing in on the other submarine where both the hunter and hunted are caught up in the excitement. Then the game is paused and a torpedo is launched. Everybody holds their breath waiting for the coordinates and the result.

The theme comes out so well in this game.

It's not a heavy game. But if you want a team based experience where all roles are collaborating to deliver victory, this seems like it.

Each crew won once. All players left the table satisfied and looking forward to more.

The main downside is that 6 to 8 is the ideal range of players. Easy to get at Christmas gatherings, but maybe not all year long if you don't have a regular gaming group.

That said, if you can get that number of players, it plays in less than an hour and it's a ton of fun.

Yeah, 6-8 is a challenge, but nice to hear it works with 6, had ruled it out entirely based on 8

Played Black Fleet this eve, went down well with the parents!

Yep. It's really no big deal for the captain (or even the engineer if he/she is more experienced) to take over the First Mate role. That one is really light weight.

I enjoy Black Fleet. It's easy to learn and has got a good amount of interaction between the players. It looks really good too.

It's not one the kids ask to play often. It seems I like it more than they do.

For picking first player / teams I can highly recommend Chwazi Finger Chooser.

You all stick a finger on your smartphone or tablet and it picks the first player.

Pretty neat

I've got a similar app called First Player. Agree it's a brilliant idea!

Father Christmas brought a few games to the Torf household this year.

Crimson Creek was brought out last night. A game that should be more straightforward than the rules explain it. Took ages and definitely needs another run through with the same group to see if it's any good!

Pandemic Legacy we are looking forward to once the in-laws have gone.

Also got Game of Thrones 2nd edition. Looks lush and just the sort of longish game for the right group of a sunday afternoon.

This is my Christmas haul, however none of those have been played yet.

We have however seen the following to the table (so far):
Black Fleet
Camel Up
Colt Express
Cockroach Poker
One Night Ultimate Warewolf
Codenames
Kahuna
Quoridor

The general what you've been playing discussion thread

Takenoko is ace, not played that in a while.

I've just had first play of Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle (just game 1 out of 7). The components and production generally are excellent. Really enjoyed it, quality deck builder with a great theme for once. Much as like the mechanics of Dominion it can be pretty hard to get people interested in it given the utter blandness of it all.

Next challenge is to get Viticulture to the table, which is likely to be a challenge due to the amount of wine that is being drunk, ironically

Yeah, I kind of turn off when I hear deck builder, not because I don't enjoy deck building, but because I spent a lot on Magic back in the day and got nowhere
I realise it's a different bag these days and there are living vs collectable but the trouble is I never know which is which and both still seem to imply buying more stuff (and needing a regular group)

Harry Potter is all in the box, so no need (and indeed not possible) to keep buying stuff

Two games in to Pandemic Legacy. Massive thumbs Up!

No spoilers from me, but it's already had our heads spinning.

A proper good version of a great game. Worth it if you can regularly get the same group together.

My son named our first disease, Brexit.

Want to pay, but don't think it's gonna happen. I'm happy enough with vanilla pandemic tho

Was gifted Mysterium and Boss Monster for Christmas.

Played quite a lot of both.

Mysterium was a big hit. I wasn't as enamored with it as everyone else (seemed a little easy to me) but no denying the quality of the production!

Boss Monster I really liked. Played that mostly two player, and there's some really nice strategy elements to it.
