I would go for Notorious and Rear Window.
I also liked Rebecca, but not so much as a Hitchcock film per se, rather for the excellent performances.

balstino, I started collecting Hitch not so long ago as I was getting bored with the more recent blockbustery type titles in my collection - expansion into Hitch seemed like a good idea! I can recommend all those in the link to my collection in my sig

Anyone looking at the following R2 titles (below) and is bothered about having their films in the original aspect ratios, they should be weary as they are all pan & scan affairs - go for the R1 versions instead as they are in the original ratios!

Buy these on R1 and not R2..lol:

Eazydvd have all the Hitchcock Collection discs for AU$16.95 ( �6.30 ) or the boxed sets for AU$150 ( �56 ). They are region 4 PAL. http://www.ezydvd.com.au/hitchcock.zml

Just checked and dvdcrave are even cheaper, AU$130 (�44) for the boxed sets.

Spellbound is one of my favourites, but you have to love wildly improbable plotlines, lush Hollywood romanticism and rear-projection skiing. It's one hell of a lot of fun, time after time.

Criterion are currently preparing a discounted 5-pack of all their Hitchcock discs (The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, Rebecca, Spellbound and Notorious) for release in May, which might interest some of you.

I already have the 39 steps but not the other criterions..(though I do have the decent UK rebecca, spellbound and notorious versions).

any idea of price yet on the criterion boxset then?

No, no price as of yet. I'd expect somewhere roughly around the $150 mark (as a RRP).

I've just ordered the Cole��o Hitchcock - Vol2 from Brazil, along with Correspondente Estrangeiro (Foreign Correspondent). This contains Hitch's 60s films in widescreen at a fraction of the cost of the R1 versions. The packaging is in Portuguese, but everything else is in English (they are engineered for R1,2,3,4)

I haven't received the discs yet, but I'll report on quality, subtitles etc when I receive them.

An investment in the forthcoming Criterion box set and the Hitchcock collection Vol. 1 (or their titles individually) is also recommended, along with Suspicion (Soupcons) from France and Blackmail from Germany or Spain.

While on the subject, is it true that Criterion released a set of their Akira Kurosawa films? I heard about it but their's nothing on their site. If it's out are the films in seperate cases? And what's the best price???

OK peps, I have Rear Window R2, North by Northwest R2, Notorious (crit) and 39 Steps (crit) either at home waiting to be watched or in transit.

Do you think I should bother with Spellbound and Lady Vanishes? Will I like them? Which is better?

The Lady Vanishes is the better of the two. Spellbound is not a bad film either, it's just not a great one.

If you like The 39 Steps, I think you'll like TLV also.

Vanishes is 'fun' - definately worth a watch mate

Interesting to know about the Hitch Criterion Set, looks like I'll have to start saving my pocket money now :norty:
