Buying A New Player?

Here's my question:

I've got a Pioneer 717 - which is just over two years old and was bought as a top end machine. If I was to purchase a machine that has been released say this year for around the Ł300 mark - I'm think of another Pioneer, perhaps the DV545 - would I have an improved player over the old 717, or would I be taking a step down in terms of Picture/Sound/Build etc. etc quality?
