I enjoyed it. It had loads going for it. But best picture? Hmmmm.
I agree, for me it was too similar to The Handmaiden which was only a couple of years ago and with a better story, when Parasite left that aspect of the story behind its storytelling became baggy as far as I'm concerned, some good humour though

Lowest TV ratings ever for this year's show. Hardly surprising as most of it was incredibly dull. All the musical numbers were absolutely terrible (though it probably would have helped if I knew who any of the performers in the overly 'woke' opening thing were), & almost all the speeches were either boring, rambling or just incoherent (Phoenix, I'm looking at you).

Bong Joon Ho's translator certainly earned her paycheck this week.

Doubling up most of the deceased for the the In Memoriam section felt kinda disrespectful, & while Billie Eilish has a good voice, she looked like she was in great pain singing over it.

There were a few laughs from the presenters (Olivia Colman, Will Ferrell & Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kristen Wiig & Maya Rudolph were highlights), but the whole 'no host' thing still didn't work. Jane Fonda looked completely lost at the end. You could see she was thinking 'Are they done? Can I close thing thing now?'

As to the winners themselves, not too many surprises there & most were richly deserved. Glad to see Brad Pitt finally get his due & Laura Dern getting an Oscar for her birthday was a nice treat. JoJo Rabbit's screenplay win came out of nowhere though & I'd love to know how 1917 swung the effects award.

They always say a perfect visual effect is one you don't know is there, but aside from digitally stitching the thing into 'one shot', adding some scenery, a few planes, fires & explosions, how in the world did that beat The Lion King or Endgame? But hey, these things are voted for the the people who work in the effects industry, so they clearly saw something I didn't (or maybe the votes for The Lion King & Endgame just cancelled each other out of the running)...

Anyhoo... 2021 Oscars - Bring back Billy Crystal!

They'd never let him have free reign so he'd never do it. Non-starter.

Bored thoughts #2588

I wonder what the Oscars will be like for 2021 as the number of films released will be pretty low.

I'm already boycotting it due to the lack of representation of aquatic species in the top awards.

I reckon all the contenders will slip a release out for the Oscar season as always, or they might do a delay. Might be more the following years where they will be struggling, are films still getting made?

Yeah. Fair point. I think there is a lag of about 18 months from filming to market so we may have some pretty crap films in 2022.

The other knock on will be the scheduling. Some real big blockbusters this year (Top Gun 2, WW 1984, Bond, Mulan, Tenet etc) which may have to clash.

I dunno when these big films will be released. There is both the cinemas being closed anyway and also whether people will want to go to the pictures to see them. I can see nobody massively wanting to put a film out.

Seeing a fair few films going straight to streaming though

Mrs H told me that Parasite is on the USA streaming service Hulu which we have, we'll get it watched this weekend.

Oscars to include streaming releases too. 6 Underground is in with a chance this year then.
