[Netflix] The Witcher series in production!

Pretty amazing announcement, wasn't expecting this at all.

Interestingly, the production company behind it specialise in animation. I do hope this is a live action show.

Sounds like they're just handling the visual effects. The producers are the people behind The Expanse, along with original author Sapkowski. I'm assuming they'll ignore the games, considering Sapkowski hates them.

That's really promising! The Expanse is a terrific show.

Anson Mount as Geralt of Rivia = Perfect casting. I assume his leading role in The Inhumans will be an issue. The other two "obvious" choices imo are Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, but Anson Mount was the first name I thought of when this was announced. He was basically playing a cowboy Geralt in that final season of Hell on Wheels, this was what he looked like behind-the-scenes at that time:

Bleach his hair and slap in some cats-eye contacts and you're done.

I loved The Witcher 3 (still slowly going through the DLC mainly as I don't want it to end...) but haven't read the books.

It's going to be interesting to know how they do this. What I know of it from TW3 it's easily got as big a world as GOT (which this is clearly hoping to fill of the void it leaves next year) but the story pretty much revolves around Geralt in the game which lessens the scope. My worry is this could end up being a monster of the week type deal.

Also I think they need to come up with a new angle to avoid accusations of just being a rerun of GOT's. If it's just different people arguing over who gets to rule with Geralt stuck in the middle it will (unfairly!) be called derivative.

Comparisons to GoT is gonna be inevitable I'm afraid, it's a bleak, morally black, sexed-up magical medieval fantasy world where the bad guys are an evil race of elves threatening to bring a frosty apocalypse to the world. The big fundamental difference is that in The Witcher the fantasy is ramped up to 11 and has both a strong horror element with all the monsters in the lore and whatnot, and a strong sci-fi element with all the parallel universes that come into play: The conjunction of spheres and the time-travel and parallel universe hopping of one of its central characters. This enables the european mythology to not only be an influence, but an actual part of the Witcherverse.

Well, colour me super disappointed, but Henry Cavill has been cast as Geralt. Definitely not a good choice in my mind. Apparently he's a super fan of the franchise, though.

By the way, the above Twitter account is the showrunner's, Lauren S. Hissrich, and she's been providing fantastic behind-the-scenes updates.

I'd disagree with that.

As a series this is beginning with probably more pressure on it than GoT's did. It's a known brand and Netflix are basically aiming it as their GoT 'replacement'. By casting Cavill, now a fairly big film star, they're indicating they are aiming for more than a cheap knock-off. Cavill is decent enough IMO, he'll be superb with the physicality of the role and personally I think he did a pretty good job with what he's been given to work with in the DC movies. Some of the character stuff in MoS is really rather good but overlooked because of the general perception about the film.

If you want more to be concerned about I'd look at who's behind the scenes. None of the show runners, directors, producers or writers past work screams major talent IMO. But then again neither does the prior work of the GoT show runners either.

I meant more that I can't possibly see him as the character in my mind.

I'm struggling to see it myself.

But apparently he's a bit of a geek and a fan of the games/world so hopefully it'll work.

It won't work, Cavil can't act for toffee, he's got one mode: Stiff, clean cut hunk and nothing else. This would be like casting Mark Wahlberg in the role, great if you want Geralt to be a street-smart tough guy from New England, terrible in every other capacity. Geralt is meant to be a cynical, downtrodden, grizzly veteran monster hunter, not Superman.

The showrunner of this is the hack who wrote most of The Defenders TV show and three episodes of the terrible Elektra arc of Daredevil. When she was hired I knew this project would go to hell in a hand basket and frggin Henry Cavill as Geralt has to be one of the worst casting decisions of the century!

So they greenlit this thing with no script or writer, then they go out and get Superman, who is happy to sign on without seeing a script.

Well supposedly he's a fan of the games who had started reading the novels so he was probably well up for it regardless of the lack of any planning/development, although Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was brought on as showrunner and writer months ago so surely she'd developed something that she could show him.

Yes, he campaigned for the role and submitted himself, he's such a big Witcher fan.

I don't think I've liked Cavill in anything I've seen him in, in a major role and I haven't liked the films or shows much either.

He's utterly bland.

On the bright side committing to this might remove him from Superman. They should just use the guy who plays Supes in Supergirl for the next Man Of Steel movie

Tyler Hoechlin would have made a much better Geralt as well!

I actually quite like Cavill as Superman. When cast in the right role (like recently in MI:Fallout) he's perfectly fine. That kind of stiff, morally upstanding (or seemingly), impossibly handsome, physically imposing, walking plank of balsa wood is completely in his wheelhouse. Geralt of Rivia is supposed to be the exact bloody opposite of that though.

If people are unfamiliar with The Witcher then this announcement would be something along the lines of Henry Cavill being announced as the new Snake Plissken in a EFNY remake.
