Difficult at 8 years, as all depends on their ability. If he's a quick learner with a good attention span for learning rules, then he might like King of Tokyo: Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games. It's not overly complicated, but more so than standard "kids" board games, and he'd probably love the theme (cartoon monsters fighting each other).

For a simpler game, he might like Gamewright Cube Quest Game: Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games. That's all about flicking cubes across a mat to knock off cubes off. It's 2 player only.

There's a thread here which might have suggestions, though it was for 12 year olds - http://forums.thedigitalfix.com/foru...d.php?t=634424

Loopin' Louie is meant to be ace, and has taken on a new life as a drinking game. I keep an eye out for it in the charity shops

We've got looping Louie. It is indeed brilliant.

City of Zombies is supposed to be very good

I've just been browsing BGG and ordered New York 1901, which looks a nice easy family game.

Terror In Meeple City, I suppose you could call the monsters "action figures" and you use them to smash up the board. Brilliant fun!

I just picked up Hey That's My Fish in a charity shop for a quid! It's a good, quick game.

If you fancy something else after that, what about Forbidden Island? It hasn't got action figures, although it has over-sized treasure models, but the theme of escaping from a sinking island may appeal to him. Also, it is a co-op game so you can strategise together on how best to win. It is a great game that you should be able to pick up for around Ł15.
