Just binged season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. The first series was okay and nothing special. But this second series is just superb the rise in quality between the two seasons is immense.

Is it possible to jump straight into Season 2, skipping the first? (I started watching the pilot and found it very meh.)

Anyone watched HBO's The Plot Against America (2020) yet ?

It's a 6-part miniseries (so far) by The Wire creators (created and written by David Simon and Ed Burns).

Yeah I am, it's the usual superb standard by Simon and Burns. Well worth watching.

Wouldn’t be a good idea to skip it, unless you read episode summaries instead.

S1 is a little slow to start but by episode 5 it really picks up. Watch it for Robert Sheehan if anything.

I’m about half way through S2 and it’s been superb so far.

Road movie/redneck wrestling comedy-drama The Peanut Butter Falcon is well worth a look, new on Netflix.

Watched this a few months back when it was cheap on Prime. It's superb, the best feel good film I've seen in years. It's feel good in the right way as well, not like the usual saccharine nonsense.

I agree, it could easily have been mishandled, but luckily wasn't.

Watched the Mercado documentary on netflix, mucho mucho amore, after hearing people laud it. Wasn't impressed, found it a bit dull, not much story to the life other than a dramatic court case. But can see how he has become a hero for woke people.

Joker is on NowTV.

Talking of NowTV I know historically it seemed a bit rubbish but I've found since they added the HD add-on (I know, I know, in 2020 we shouldn't be paying extra for 1080p but there we go...) I've been impressed by the stream quality. I'm watching on an OLED and I'd say the 1080p quality is as good as Amazon Prime.

If you're into a bit of dark sci-fi with your revenge, Upgrade is now on Netflix. Doesn't quite live up to its potential, but it's a decent ride.

We enjoyed this more than I thought we would. It helped that it was filmed near us in the Leeds/Otley area. Being based on a true story was good too! My wife and daughter actually saw Matthew Goode working out in their local gym when he was filming this!

Fargo - went into this expecting the dip in quality after S1, when I actually enjoyed S2-3 more. I wasn't convinced by the 2 leads in S1, and something felt off about the tone imo (despite liking the Coens' stuff). S2-3 are less quirky and I found them more interesting & believable. But I do wish they'd stop casting Brits in American roles though - it takes me a while to accept their characters. 8/10

Normal People - this is sizzling hot'n'sexy but still manages to capture moody 'new relationship energy' in subtle ways you don't often see portrayed (in 2 excellently acted shy introverts). Lots of psychology on show, so we even paused a few times to discuss.
But it does jump around a bit, is a little slow & repetitive, and there are one or two annoying niggles. Good overall, when it could have been great. 7.5/10

Amazon have finally added their original film Honey Boy to Prime. Watched it last night and it's really good.

Also for those with decent setups it's in HDR and has an Atmos soundtrack.

driver8 - did you like S3 of Fargo? the one review I half saw suggested it's not too good so I've been reluctant to start it. Enjoyed S1 and 2.

I gave up on S3 after a few episodes. It wasn't anywhere near as good as S1 or S2.

Yes, as I said, I actually enjoyed S2+3 more than S1.

So long as you don't actually *hate* Ewan Mcgregor then you'll be fine (I think he's "OK", and he's OK in this too, but with plenty to do).

Besides, David Thewlis is deliciously OTT!

S2 with Dunst, Plemons/Ted Danson and Patrick Wilson was fantastic. S3 was great Thewlist chews through the season, brilliant character. Each season is a different show, don't think there's much point rating them against each other. S1 is fairly simple and close to the Coen's original film. S2 crosses into the more bizarre territory. S3 is somewhere between the two...

Quote:
The fourth season is set in 1950 in Kansas City and the story follows two crime syndicates as they vie for control. The cast is led by Chris Rock, who plays Loy Cannon, the head of a crime syndicate made up of black migrants fleeing the Jim Crow South who have a contentious relationship with the Kansas City mafia. Other cast members include Jessie Buckley, Jack Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, and Timothy Olyphant.

The season was originally scheduled to premiere on April 19, 2020, but this was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Season 4 sounds great.

They seem to be going further south with each season.. S1 was slightly north of Fargo in Bemidji, Minnesota, Not sure if that's a pattern. Think the only thing that matters it's the same 'Fargo Universe' ..
