For F1 historians "Crash and Burn" the Tommy Byrne story has been on BBC Northern Ireland but it is on iPlayer.

Horrible collision in the F4 at Donington today. Billy Monger taken to Nottingham hospital with possible leg injuries.

https://youtu.be/z_6FlFW_no8

There's nothing graphic in that clip btw.

Absolute nightmare collision unsighted straight into a stationary car, I hope he is able to recover from his injuries. They took a long time (1.5 - 2 hrs) extracting him from the car.

Had to have both legs amputated.

Awful news. He's only 17.

Devastating news. I hope in time he'll be able to draw inspiration from Alex Zanardi's story. Maybe even one day drive a touring car in the BTCC with adapted controls.

There's a crowd funding page that's raised over 200 grand for him in a few hours: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/billymonger23

Just saw the video taken from Monger's on-board camera. It was terrible - he was completely blind-spotted. Did the stewards not have time to wave yellow flags?

The other car spinning happened seconds before, so I doubt there was time, but even if yellows were out he probably wouldn't have seen them in time from within that battle. Reminds me of Memo Gidley's crash in Daytona.

I was going to ask about the other car & its driver. I did not realise that he had spun on the tack; the position that the car was, I thought it stopped due to a technical failure of some kind. I was going to say that if the other driver's car had given out, he should have moved over to the adjoining grass verge rather than stop on the track.

An update from Billy Monger:

That's one tough lad.

There will also be an MSA/FIA investigation into the accident:
