8 in desktop mode is the same as 7 but boots faster, has a much more useful task manager and a nicer looking file copy dialog. Not a lot to recommend over 7. But nothing to dislike it for either.

Is this that KB3035583 patch that's prompting this?

I like the way they will download Win 10 to your machine ahead of the release date to avoid killing their servers, MS really are upping their game here.

I'm really happy with 8.1 TBH. Unless it offers gaming performance improvements, I can't see the point of upgrading, as that is all my Windows machine is used for.

The interface of 10 really solves all issues that people had with 8. Plus the app model is changing and so is the way your can use modern apps. For gaming aren't they moving to a new version of direct x?

Have you not seen the DX12 benchmarks?

Is DX12 in the preview then? Also is it retrospective or will games have to be patched to take advantage of it?

Patched I believe. Not that I personally need current games any faster. From a selfish perspective, future support is fine for me!

It's compatible with current hardware which is the main thing.

That damn patch had a side effect of hiding my non-windows devices on my home network (two Linux devices and a printer). Got them all back as soon as I uninstalled it (after a week of getting really frustrated by it!)

DX12 is already there.. though as said, games needs to support it.

The Nvidia Windows 10/DX12 drivers are very stable now there's an official beta. Not had a single problem with them and have been running preview for a couple of months.

If you're not getting the invite for Windows 10, there's a script here to trigger it: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...2-a999a883265b

Made it come up instantly on my laptop where no amount of running windows updates or attempting to manually run it succeeded.

Target have you installed Windows 10 on your XPS? The latest build doesn't really seem to be very stable and I have been having a lot of issues with Spartan.

So tonight decided to install it on my desktop (8 year old quad core) and man Spartan really is a massive improvement over IE. So simple and light weight, although I did manage to make it crash trying to load Google Play Music.

But awesome cool moment number 1: As I have also installed Windows 10 Mobile on a Nokia and downloaded Word, Excel and PowerPoint those apps are available to me on my desktop. These are not the desktop versions these are the universal apps, can open documents from OneDrive and edit (despite it saying I need a office 365 account). I was just floored by the concept of the same app from two such different device.

MS have been banging on about universal apps for so long but to see it in action was just mind boggling.

No, I'm waiting for release. Can't be bothered with the reinstall that beta to release would entail!

Are we going to be able to do a fresh install from the free version though?

I hope so. I'll be a ballache to have to install 8, then 8.1 and then 10. Last time I did a reinstall it took me two days for it to complete the 4GB 8.1 update because my connection isn't consistent enough.
