Thanks Chris, I've already added a 16GB Sandisk USB to a recent Amazon order for when I do the reinstall!

Of course its not got spyware. Good grief. The ISO I used probably did though...
All I was suggesting, is that if Shingster didn't have a spare USB ("I don't really have any spare USB sticks knocking around") then this software could help. Twas only a suggestion.
When I say 'running'.. I mean you run Windows from the USB stick... as, there are no other drives in your machine at all. The C drive is the USB stick. Rufus can do this.

Creating a windows installer from an ISO and putting it on a USB stick can be done 100% using the Microsoft download.

Outside of those two use cases, please explain the use case of Wintohdd is? You can image a disk within Windows to install windows? Then after this you then need to go into the bios and make sure it's setup correctly so you can boot into it? Seems like a much more complicated/risky way of plugging in a new drive, disconnecting the old one, booting into a Microsoft USB boot environment and installing windows normally.

And yes, this software looks like it's got some crappy data harvesting, advertising or other manner of making money outside of it's outward function. I assess data privacy impact and validate appropriate software assurance is followed by vendors. Just by looking at it, I know that if included software like this in an Enterprise Windows deployment process I'd be fired. For the sake of a system reboot which you are doing anyway, you absolutely don't need it.

No, it installs. Plug in a HDD (via USB) and point it at an ISO, and it installs onto that HDD.

> Outside of those two use cases, please explain the use case of Wintohdd is?

I had a friends laptop and it just wouldn't boot off USB. Tried a couple of sticks, different formats, different tools. Just wouldn't have it. I didn't have an external CD ROM unit, so installing directly on an HDD plugged in via USB adapter worked well.

> For the sake of a system reboot which you are doing anyway, you absolutely don't need it.

You are probably indeed correct, but in my use case, it solved an issue and worked well.

> And yes, this software looks like it's got some crappy data harvesting, advertising or other manner of making money outside of it's outward function.

Aah, that's different than spyware. Shingster doesn't need it anyway and didn't download it, so its a moot point. I didn't find any issues with it, personally.

Update 2004 became available for me today - nice surprise as I'd not changed/updated anything on my laptop!

me too, still fails

next step is remove sound card as appears to be a driver issue (based upon error message) and driver is 5 years old. The graphics card has an up to date driver

My old PC Intel 6700 (I think is memory serves me right) got 2004 many weeks ago.
My newer? i7 6700 sandybridge only last night did I find the 2004 update was ready for it. before then it was saying not ready.

Must admit, I just said "got for it" on both my PC's at the time it was available and thankfully both machines updated perfectly.

I will admit, I'd like a clean install as I still have the issue/bug on them both (is this just me) When I open up a file request box, say "my pictures" it opens up instantly, then sits there for about 5 seconds or more, before the files on display actually pop into the correct order.
weird.

Updated my laptop last night - took a while and 5gb download, but all went OK. NVIDIA panel is still showing the pending minor update for my GTX-1060 card that I will hold off on.

My wife's laptop also updated yesterday, and differently to mine in that it asked all sorts of setup questions after the WELCOME intro (add your mobile number??)

Driver Easy - another heads up for this excellent free tool that scans your system and prompts for manual/individual installs (automated in pro).

Happy to try that, but it's been going of for years now on both machines.
And the file requester box's where you go to load a picture or file into another app just show details.

I think I was told it's due to a large number of files/folders and it takes a while to put them in, say, data order when you open up the box.

Seems a but fishy of a reason but hey

Before I say anything. Yes I know it needs a good sort out!
Not sure about my other PC but on this one:

Pictures Folder: 1,701 Files, 68 Folders

You can now go ahead and say "well what do you expect?"

Are these 1,701 'standard' JPG files (~4 MB each), or 56 MB RAW images?
As a test, simply put the large sized images in their own folder, and reduce the number of files in the directory.

To be fair there is a lot of junk in there
Some video's and stuff.

Need to give it a good sort out. You know how it's easy to just let things collect you have no need for.....

I feel dirty!

Will have a clean up and see how it goes.
Something DID happen I think around the Windows 7 to 8 timeframe.
Things got slow in the file requester and was supposed to be a bug at the time I though, but it's never got better.
Time for a tidy.

I'm sure a fresh install would do both my machines a world of good as they've both gone from 7, thru 8 and onto 10 without one.

Sometimes I see something similar - opening a folder full of thumbs, and windows seems to do a new scan for some reason, as if it's re-reading all the metadata, and there's a progress bar along the top as it does so. Sometimes it might take a minute for all the thumbs to appear, especially on an external HDD.

As you say Tempest, this was an on-off issue for some years. I thought it was ccleaner, emptying out the thumb cache, but I rarely run anything like that these days. Unless it's an auto-cleanup by Windows 10 ... I seem to remember it does that now?

A number of images on a HDD you'll be waiting. Change the view to details with no preview/thumbnail and if that doesn't run any quicker...

Clearing the thumbnail cache will make it slower btw.. as it rebuilds the cache. But if there's an old cache that's a bit big or has some dead references they'll no longer clutter it.

I get that occasionally in video folders, where it seems to rescan the whole folder.
