Why won't the stupid upgrade icon stay hidden?
I've tried the different taskbar options but the damn thing comes back next time I restart the PC. All the other icons stay the way I have set them.

I may be wrong here and talking out of my arse "Won't be the 1st time!"

Who shouted that from the back?

However, and this is a total and utter guess on my part, and I'm probably 100% totally wrong.

But.......... (wild speculation)

I could see this new Windows Icon becoming a permanent thing from now on, and into Windows 10.

Windows 10 and onwards, will upgrade service packs and upgrades etc as they come along I've been led to believe, constantly growing and upgrading.

It did cross my mind, if this new Icon may be the way, from now and into the future we see what's happening on that aspect.
Perhaps, if you will, Msofts little icon/window that everyone gets to learn if the place that lets you know about this stuff.

Total guess on my part.

I was wondering if this new Windows icon may turn out to be a new permanent item to keep people informed about Windows updates and status into the future.

You can get rid of it by uninstalling Update KB3035583 then rebooting your PC. When you next run Windows Update you need to right click this update to hide it or it will get installed again.

Presumably you then kill your ability to pre-load Windows 10 if you care about such things?

Not bothered about that at all but I more than glad that the icon has gone as I don't like the fact that it is forced upon me in this way and that there is no way to get rid of it, apart from getting rid of the update.

Must admit, I'm not bothered about the icon myself.
There is already one for volume, Internet, Notification flag and a little show hidden things icon. Having a tiny Windows Icon, which may in the future give me info about items coming officially from Msoft would be fine in my book

The best idea I can come up with is, simply please just ignore my postings in the future, it's the easiest answer I feel.

My apologies for confusing you.

Please enjoy your weekend

The little windows icon has appeared on my Windows Media Centre PC in our lounge.

I clicked on it to check to see if there were any update problems.

No, it says, no problems at all found during the scan. However, further on down it says :

Windows Media Center will be uninstalled during the upgrade. It isn't available in Windows 10.

Guess that rules out updating that PC. It'll have to stay on Windows 8.1 as it feeds live TV for the whole house. Very disappointing that they are dumping WMC - it is great and simple to use.

My guess is that they want to encourage people to buy an xbox one instead to use as a media device.

Yep it is a gonner, my only experience with it was on the 360 where it was slow, clunky and crashed a lot. It hasn't been updated in years and only a very small number of people use it. I do wonder if the enthusiast community will find a way for it to run on 10.

It's really fast on xbox 360s for me. It's the best live TV application I've ever used.

However, I am completely open to any suggestions of anything better. I've tried mediaportal, mythTV, TVHeadend etc. over the last few years but never found them as good as WMC.

I don't find Kodi to be very good for live TV, mainly I find the EPG a bit rubbish.

I've got digiguide feeding into WMC through DVB link so the EPG is very extensive.

edited to mention : It's got to have capability to have 6 tuners including DVB -S(2) and DVB-T at the same time.

Just waiting till I get some wires sorted out, and a new BIG TV, and I'll be getting an XBox One, and linking my PC (which will have Windows 10 also) up to the new TV.

Looking forward to this all working great together.

Perhaps with an Xbox One, there will be little need for a PC connected also?
Depends what the Xbox can do, with Windows 10? iPlayer etc?

Going to be good I'm sure (I hope)

I'm keen to find out how Windows 10 is going to "slip onto" a Windows 8.1 or, even more so a Windows 7 machine.

When I went from 7 to 8.1 (in one jump) which you can only do via, basically a clean install "you need to re-install all your apps"

Even during the 8.1 install process, where I said "Yes" to the delete everything option, after it had finished, Windows 8.1 had STILL created a folder called something like "Windows-OLD" which had a lot of the old stuff kept there so you could try and manually salvage some bits I guess.

Didn't quite understand why it did that, even after I said, yes, nuke it all!

Would I be totally wrong do you think, to consider Windows 10, is not a million miles away from in reality being Windows 8.1 with a new Front End/GUI, together with some core and not so core tweaks?

So, it's not going to be a HARD Change for a machine to go from 8.1 to 10 in essence?

Windows 7 to 10 is going to be much more of a upheaval for machines?
TBH It seems very brave of Msoft.
Given, as well all know, the 100 Trillion? different mixes of hardware permutations all running together around the world, running Windows 7.
To expect pretty much all those machines to smoothly change over from 7 to 10 would seem a GIANT expectation.

Heck, Apple even struggles to move from 1 version of OSX to another, on a tiny tiny selection of 100% known hardware, without introducing screw ups.
For Microsoft to be able to pull of a Windows 7 to 10 upgrade on such a vast array of user selected hardware combinations put together over many years would make them software gods!

Whatever happens (and I'm sure there will be some problems) I hope myself and everyone here, has a smooth ride through this transition.

Even if 99% of all windows machines get a smooth ride.
Given Windows and PC's still total dominance around the world, just 1% of failed/problem upgrades I guess is going to cause some media negativity, ignoring the fact that 99% went fine.
