So I have three computers with Windows 10 successfully reserved. I am not hopeful that the servers will cope with the demand for the 3Gb downloads!

It's pre-loading it. One of the reasons for this reserving thing.

I only have 1-2GB free on my C drive. What happens then? Will it let me download it onto another drive?

Not sure you should be running Windows in general with so little free space on the system disk. Never mind contemplating upgrading the current install to a new one!

It's only a 64GB SSD. I've deleted all non-essential programs I can, and run CrapCleaner regularly. It never seems to free up any more space though. There's no data whatsoever on the drive.

I've been contemplating buying a bigger SSD and then cloning my C drive onto that.

You can run it on one of these little things. A PC the size of a phone charger!

Hope it's got a fan, those non intel branded compute sticks without any cooling really suffer performance wise.

But there is some very nice pre-built hardware coming out for not much money and that can only be a good thing to push sales that have been suffering since 8 launched.

You know what I'd like to see.

Building hardware directly to support what Windows does.
I know some have asked that, like in the Past Windows was "on chip" and not on a drive.
If that's even worthwhile these days I've no idea.

It would be interesting, and I'd love to see, if Intel would make changes to their chips/hi end chips to actually built routines, and "things windows does" into the actual hardware of the CPU itself.

Cost wise, who knows, and how much muscle and market share Msoft has to make this something to even consider.
Likewise on the GPU front.

Could you build CPU and GPU hardware, to some degree, around Windows?

There's a disconnect between what Windows is written in and what the processor runs. Namely the C Compiler.

Perhaps it's better if I mean things Windows does on-screen being hard coded into the chips.

This was done in ye-olde days, perhaps is pointless now due to speed?

One can't help but feel, if, there ever was a time, when Software maker (Msoft) and hardware maker (Intel) could get together in bed at the same time.

You could hard wire in some aspects of the OS into the CPU.

Or then again perhaps not!

Well that's antitrust suit waiting to happen. Besides even Microsoft patched out Secureboot in 8.1 updates so if it's off in EFI BIOS your not pestered to turn it back on.

Silly question but do you get a Windows 10 upgrade per PC running a qualifying edition? My 8.1 laptop has got the little system tray icon (and I've registered) but my desktop PC (Windows 7, rarely used these days, until right now!) hasn't had the icon.

Will it still get the upgrade?

I'm expecting delivery of a new laptop tomorrow, so I'm wondering how I should approach the following in light of W10 being on the horizon:

The laptop has 8.1 pre-installed. It has a hybrid drive, which I am going to replace with the SSD I have in my existing W7 laptop. How is best to do this?

When I originally got the SSD, I cloned it from the existing HDD in the laptop rather than a clean install. When I looked into clean installing W7 a few months ago I ran into difficulties because my product key was for a pre-install rather than a retail purchase of it, so I didn't follow-up on the clean install. So, can I download a 8.1 iso for a flash drive, install that on the SSD placed in the new laptop, and it will then install clean with my pre-install key? Should I erase what is on the SSD from the old laptop first e.g. W7, or will the new install of 8.1 wipe the SSD anyway?

Or should I just clone the hybrid onto the SSD and wait for W10 to arrive? I assume all the W10 installs will be clean.

Or am I missing something/misunderstanding anything? Clearly I don't have much idea what I'm doing here

I'd clone the whole 8.1 disk over to the SSD - mainly because the drive in the laptop will likely contain the recovery partition for the laptop - you don't want to lose that if you can help it.
Either that or remember to create the 'recovery disk' on the 8.1 laptop, that should give you the recovery software onto a USB drive. With that, you can then just move the SSD to the new laptop and build the software from the USB, without cloning from the 8.1 disk.
