[Multi] Doom 4 or just "Doom" now

Big reveal at Quakecon on 17th July.

Teaser for that:

I never fully got on with Doom 3 but it still had its jump moments. Looking forward to this.

I was scrolling along looking for a particular thread when I noted this had no replies.

Weird how times change isn't it? When a Doom sequel ellicits no interest whatsoever... :o

Doom 3 was almost unplayably bad on consoles and ridiculously demanding on PCs when it came out. Passed most people by.

I got as far as listening to someone drivel on for about five minutes so I could get an access code.

I hope this one is a game instead of a tech demo, like 3.

I just want the return of maze like levels with secret doors and stupid weapons.

So bored of modern linear fps games.

I had the machine to do it justice at the time, for me it was completely joyless and boring. When i finally got the Hell levels (and the one before which cranked up the tension) it picked up massively but then you got dumped back onto the Mars base after only a few levels. You had to the repeat the last few levels of the base backwards. That was the last straw. It was lazy game design and stupid dark. I wanted more action not a cheap horror house style, turn on the lights and bring 'em on!

it really wasn't, the level design was poor mostly but nothing to do with consoles

I seem to remember God awful frame rates and ropey graphics. Might be misremembering.

Played them on the first xbox (and the add on RoE) and recently on 360 (360 ver. was lazy port) but frame rate was fine and decent graphics for the first xbox

I realise I'm in a massive minority, but I was a huge fan of Doom 3 - easily makes my top 5 favourite shooters.

I'd read something that reckoned there was only one way to play it, and that was to put it straight onto 'nightmare' difficulty, play it in the dark late at night, and use headphones. I followed that advice and it was amazing - utterly exhausting to play due to the sheer intensity of it.

Could never understand people moaning about the dark and using the permanent flashlight mods - one of the key elements was the panic between spotting something with your torch, then having to switch to a gun and shooting where you think the monster was...

I recently finished the original Dead Space, and that owes a significant debt to Doom 3...

I never managed to finish Doom 3. It was actually quite scary but didn't do enough to keep me playing. I have it on Steam so may give it another go soon.

I stand corrected... I'm thinking of Quake 4 on Xbox 360. I only played Doom 3 on PC.

Doom 3. Yup, here come the goosebumps. Those skull faced spiders put the ***** up me. Terrifying when they swarmed a room and you're just blasting away at the darkness.

Im nearly sweating thinking about it.

I'll be honest, doom 3 was irritating. I remember watching the e3 footage and was literally jizzing my pants because the graphics had taken a huge leap.

But the game had so many 'make you jump' moments it just became, essentially, too ******* scary.

Now where's my safety blanket...
