Time for an update on this, seeing as Apple's free trial is coming to an end soonish. Well, I've cancelled my AM sub and have gone back to Spotify. At the moment, the service is just too flakey for me, whereas Spotify has been bullet-proof in all the years I've been using it. I can't see as there is a lot between them, in terms of content, and really the only thing I will miss are the curated playlists, and the little pop-up that comes up on your screen when the track changes - that is well cool if you are doing other things on your laptop - maybe that's a Mac feature - dunno. Either way, I can't seem to replicate it with Spotify.

The straw that broke the camel's back, was Airplay was not playing nice with my amp on AM (brief audio drop-outs) whereas (again) Spotify is flawless in that regard. It comes to something, when Apple can't even get their own streaming service working properly with their own software!

Yes, I've gone back to Spotify as its a lot better in my opinion, the interface is a lot slicker/simpler.

Do they refresh the songs on the curated playlists much? One of Spotify's strong points is the social side and how easy it is to share and follow other people's playlists. Stale playlists get boring so quickly IMO.

I read the other day that Lowe has said they've realised that people are listening to Beats 1 a lot but it means they're listening to a lot of the same and they need to freshen them more often.

I think I'll give spotify another try (not tried it since they updated the Sonos integration), but I forgot to cancel my Google music in time so just paid another month, so I'll wait until that ends.

I'll certainly try Apple Music when it's on other platforms, I think it'll be interesting to see how they do it for those, how/if they'll offer match, etc.

I don't think they refresh the songs very often as they are reusing the playlists from Apple Match still as a lot of the tracks are greyed out. Have to say the weekly dynamic playlist on Netflix is very good. First time I've explored it.

I was hoping Spotify would bring down the price of additional members/family membership...am still trying to decide which way to jump.

Holy crap. How to completely alienate your userbase and go out of business.

I won't be agreeing to spotify having my contacts details and I am sure most companies wouldn't want their employee issued phones to give spotify access to sensitive data.

This one will go on for a bit.

Even after agreeing to new terms, doesn't the iOS app need to ask for permissions as well? If you deny there it should be all good no?

Unless the app refuses to run without said permissions being granted...

Looks like Spotify are trying damage limitation but not doing a U-turn on the privacy issue yet. I'm sure they'll have to back down, really not a good time for them to be alienating users with Apple Music making big waves. They've always said no publicity is bad publicity, but I'm not so sure these days with the way negative press can spread so quickly.

I noticed something I didn't expect with Google Music at the weekend. I'm currently on Google Music All Access.

I was due to fly a few days ago, so I downloaded three albums and a playlist to my phone from Google Music, a Noah and the Whale Album and Luisa Sobral album that I'd uploaded to Music as FLAC, plus a second Luisa album that had been uploaded as 320 MP3 and a curated playlist from Music.

When they had all downloaded I looked at the filesizes to see how much space they had taken up, and was suprised to see the size of the two albums I'd uploaded as FLAC;

Screenshot 2015 08 20 19 48 18

I thought that Google Music automatically converted any FLAC files to 320 MP3, but looking at this perhaps they've changed that. I can't find the files on my phones to see what format they are (apparently Google Music stores its downloads in an encrypted area)

Strange....

I just read an interesting article about how streaming services royalties really geared up to benefit the big mainstream artists and the smaller ones lose out. It's a bit long and convoluted, but interesting reading;

https://medium.com/cuepoint/streamin...f-61dc501e7f94

And his older one on the same subject;

The 'subscriber share' method detailed would clearly be a much better option (better for smaller bands, subscribers' money would only be going to the bands they listen to, etc), but can't see it ever happening.

Thanks for the links - very interesting reading. I suppose it's obviously flawed thus when you stop and think about it a little...

I'm loving apple music - first time I've tried a streaming service. its great having all that music at your finger tips, and the playlists as well.
HOWEVER - the iCloud integration is awful. So many mistakes and errors and bugs in it. I'll probably cancel apple music just because of that which is a real shame. The general ui is pretty bad all over which seems unusual for apple.

So i was only showing music on this PC.

Which leads me to another question..How do you now add local music to an iPhone. I cannot find anyway whatsoever to get my own music onto my iPhone. iCloud Music Library is on but nothing ever moved to the iPhone. Everything just has a waiting cloud icon. I thought any file i added from my PC would be uploaded to iCloud if not matched, or just shown if it does match. This is a total nightmare, i thought synching with Spotify was bad..

It's horrific to be honest. It is a while since I gave up on AM and ran back to Spotify, but it took a lot of experimentation to even get Apple to match my songs correctly, let alone get them on an iPhone.

So I am still on my am trial and I am still using it. Today I decided I wanted to listen to Scroobious Pip (whose albums I own) and am could only find iTunes version which in the U.S. Is not all his albums and they have weird listings.

I gave up and switched over to spotify as am couldn't find the ******* albums I own.
