Choice of 2 Surround Sound systems..which should I buy?

Hi guys,

Hope someone can help me? I've been looking to upgrade my Blu Ray player and buy a soundbar for my small apartment living room.

I've come across two models that combine both of these and that have particularly caught my eye and I was looking for some advice as to which is the better suited (both are around the same budget)

Really want the sound system for watching Blu Rays and movies from the SkyHD box. Dont have Netflix and Lovefilm but both these options would provide that for me. It would be connected to a Panasonic Plasma TH42PZ80B 42" thats 4 year old and therfore doesnt have the smart tv technology that again these machines would now provide me. Not interested in gaming.

The two models are the LG BB551A Soundbar http://www.lg.com/uk/home-entertainm...system/reviews

and the Samsung HT-E8200 http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/t...ar/HT-E8200/XU

The only difference that I can see is that the LG offers 4.1 sound while the Samsung offers 2.1 sound.

If anybody can give me any advice on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Cheers!

If it is a sound bar without any additional speakers then it is probably pseudo 4.1 anyway - it probably tried to imitate surround sound and tis probably only works if you sit in the right spot and have the right kind of reflective walls/ceiling for the sound to bounce around...

Not looked at the links but I wouldn't touch any sound bar that didn't have digital inputs. Looked at the Roth 2.1 previously and it was basically taking standard phono stereo signal and doing it's own low frequency separation and passing that to the sub.

Couldn't really give you much advice on products as I've not really looked into soundbars. But the 4.1 on the LG is a bit of a gimmick really. It's supposed to mean two front speakers, two rear and a subwoofer. This however seemingly just puts four loudspeakers on the soundbar. IMO that's still essentially a 2.1 setup.
The Samsung has 400w total RMS, and the LG has 430w, so I guess the extra 2 speakers give it a little more kick...

If I had to choose I'm probably go fro the LG. Trusted Reviews seemed to really like it:

Agree with you. Both of these models have HDMI's in thankfully.

Mamboboy...thanks for that. Definitely helps clarifies it. Trusted Reviews gave both of the soundbars 9/10 so I'm probably being too pinickity when it comes to choosing one of these systems.

Expect it to be better than your TV speakers, just don't expect it to give you a real surround sound. When I've looked in the past at these, the one that always seems recommended is the Yamaha range.

I know mate, and in an ideal world I would be going for the Yamaha. But at £700, I simply dont have the budget especially as I need to upgrade my Blu Ray player as well.

The room in which it will be located is quite small so as long as its an improvement on the TV speakers, as well as bringing a range of Smart TV features to the Plasma then I'll be happy.

Ok...slight rethink here. I can buy the Yamaha for £600 that's refurbished & comes with a 2 year warranty. It increases my budget as I'll still have to buy a decent Blu ray player. But it gets the best review of all the soundbars, and it seems to be the one that comes closest to giving a surround sound experience.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated...?
