DVD drive stopped working (and PC wont recognise a portable drive)

My PC DVD drive has stopped working (yellow ! sign over the drive in the Device manager).

I've tried updating the driver. It does this happily enough, but then still refuses to work, stating "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I've also tried plugging in two different portable USB DVD drives which the PC refuses to acknowledge the existence of.

Any ideas what I can do to get any of them to work?

Try a different USB port. Does anything else work in the port you're trying for this? I would have guessed that the controller on the drive had blown, but the fact that other drives also fail could indicate the mobo controller has gone. Can your machine see the drive in bios/ as a boot drive? Specs of the pc and OS would be useful.

Thats two usb drives not internal which might indicate windows issues. I'd suggest the 5v power rail but then the pc wouldn't boot as the harddrive would be gone and the graphics card wouldn't be responding either.
Check for the ide/sata controllers in the device manager and see if it indicates anything connected aside from the harddrive. Do any other usb devices function in those ports and do the usb dvd drives have external psus

What OS are you using? The only time I've had something similar was under XP and that was caused by a hardware update, used System Restore to get back to previous point.

No problem with the USB ports - everything else works fine in them.

I'm using XP - so perhaps it could be a hardware update as you suggest.

Will try a system restore and see what happens.

If I remember rightly my problem was related to a Soundblaster driver update.
