If you have not seen it already, take a look at the photo of Bernie Ecclestone embracing (at least I assume that's what he's doing ) Alonso in F1 site's Gallery. The expression on Alonso's face is treasure!

The man is an absolute legend What a fantastic achievement.

Also in the news today, a video from the Richard Burns foundation:

Very poignant to watch, can't believe it's almost 6 years since he passed away

Pretty inspiring about Zanardi full-stop really. I don't know how the hell I'd cope mentally if I lost both my legs, let alone physically. What he's achieved since his awful accident and how he's pushed himself really is amazing.

There is an interesting thread in the Planet F1 forum about a hypothetical race between the Williams FW14B that Mansell drove to his 1992 world championship and the current Red Bull RB7. Both cars will follow whatever rules and equipement that are contemporary to them ie the FW14B with everything that it was allowed in 1992 while the RB7 uses whatever it is now allowed. The cars will be driven by two nameless drivers with maximum expertise in respective cars and there will be no other cars involved. Starting abreast, they have to race 60 laps of Interlagos.

Who will win?

Well, after some speculation, Interlagos was chosen on the assumption that it has changed the least in the intervening 19 years out of the circuits common to both those seasons.

One point to remember is the pit stops. Although the FW14B has to use the old style kit to change tyres and so need longer pit stops than the RB7, unlike the latter the Williams will not have any pit lane speed restrictions since none existed in 1992.

And the Williams will not have to faff about on a compulsory hard tyre stint, presumably.

Surely if in this hypothetical race, if they're competing with different rules (in pits & race) then the quickest way to deduce the answer is just compare the winning times of the cars in each year?!

won't this information be on line. how long did it take the williams to do 60 laps of interlagos in 1992? that information already exists and i imagine last years red bull will be similar to this years, so...

Well obviously the 2011 race hasn't happened yet, but Wiki says...

1992: Mansell won in 1:36:51.856 (lapped everyone apart from 2nd place man 30 seconds back)
2010: Vettel won in 1:33:11.803

Although you've got safety cars etc.

Really - who cares?

Just playing around with history, I guess. Both cars were designed by Adrian Newey, had Renault engines and dominated those years.

While the actual race times (2010 for the RB7) are indicative, there are variables that are not immediately obvious. The difference in tyre change times, intervention by the relative positions of other drivers in the race etc. A head-to-head just between those two cars might be closer.

No. The FW14B can race under whatever the 1992 rules allowed; likewise the RB7 should follow the 2011 rules.

If people feel that the longer pit stops for the Williams will put it at a signifcant disadvantage despiet the faster pit lane speeds it is allowed, an alternative would be for the two cars to race 20 laps of the circuit with just one set of tyres of their respective choice.

Looks like Bern is playing fast 'n loose with the race contracts again. At the weekend he was saying worrying things about the Austin GP, which got its officals concerned, now they've shut down construction on site till its sorted.

On an only very slightly related note -

the final round of each of the three major nascar championship (camping world truck series, nationwide series, sprint cup series) from homestead/miami will be live and FTA on premier sports - sky channel 433 - this weekend.

friday night for the trucks (check timings but i think around 9pm)
satuday night for nationwide series (just after midnight)
sunday night around 7pm for the sprint cup.

it's extremely close in the cup series between two drivers (equivalent to 3 race positions or less, depending on bonus points) so should make for an exciting race (if you don't mind oval racing!). i was at homestead the last time tony stewart - my favourite driver - took the championship in 2005, and he has a great chance again. wish i was there!

Good thing I haven't booked my flights yet. I've got friends in Austin, so this was going to be perfect for my first F1 race in person and visiting my spiritual home! Here's hoping they get it sorted

Can't say I'll shed any tears. It would only have taken away a decent European race anyway.
