Google+ (Discussion)

Google have announced their new social networking tools Google+

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/28/g...t-with-google/

Not quite sure what to make of this, it's not their first attempt at social networking, they launched Buzz and Wave which both seem to have disappeared into obscurity despite the relatively large user base of gmail.

See this Thread for invite info

I know what you mean but I'm still intrigued to check it out. I think it's just fun to see what all the fuss whenever a new Google service launches.

I know last time with Wave we had a list of people who wanted invites if anyone had any to spare, are we going to do something similar this time? I'd certainly be grateful for an invite if people have spares.

Looks like facebook but with the **** taken out. Count me in

But unfortunately it's not up to me. All my family and friends would need to migrate to this from facebook.

Does this mean I can send files and pictures over google instant messaging? That would be great.

Watched one or two of the videos, looks like the best parts of Twitter and Facebook combined. Could be an interesting mashup, I think a lot of people are now tired of the bloat in Facebook.

Any idea on how to get invites to the beta or full launch date? Downloaded the android app but can't get in.

If they actually let people that wanted to, use their software rather than this stupid invite thing they insist on doing, maybe their ideas would actually take off...

Facebook without the bloat would be a big thumbs up for me - have only recently started using FB but I find the iPhone version much more bearable

But as has been already mentioned, FB is ubiquitous now - I can't see this taking of as you won't get a critical mass of people moving across.

they're too late to this game, fb and twitter have sown up the market. Unless they're doing something genuinely different and it doesn't look like they are then it's doomed to go the way of buzz.

wave was great and I wish they'd work that into some real mail clients, the hassle of running two was what killed that.

I really like the look of this.
People might use this as well as using facebook and twitter etc..

I've only seen posts from online journalists so far. Lots of people are asking how to get an invite, but it seems to be quite a small number of people so far. Just how they expect to launch a social media competitor to Facebook with limited user access is beyond me. Surely Google are capable of running a closed beta to iron out issues first, then release to the masses to capitalise on the buzz?

You can sign up here: https://plus.google.com/up/start/?sw=1&type=st

It wasn't working last night, but I did register earlier today... so who know how long it will be. At least when Buzz was made available, it was able to grow organically by letting you invite friends, which is kind of the point of this.

If invites are going to be dished out again, I'll start another thread like we did last time for Wave and keep an ordered list in the first post.

Look forward to the first few invites breaking out of the inner circle. Once the press start sharing, the floodgates will be opened.

Very interested with the group video chat, especially as it's free! Will be useful at work and home!

I'm in! It looks like the +1 UI is no less cluttered, messy and complicated than Facebook. I need to spend more time playing with this but can't say I'm blown away by it yet. I'll have to watch the This Week In Google video podcast today for tips and tricks.

iTunes Ping really is the only social network I like so far.

Already invited? We've temporarily exceeded our capacity. Please try again soon.

We’re still ironing out a few kinks in Google+, so it’s not quite ready for everyone to climb aboard. But, if you want, we’ll let you know the minute the doors are open for real. Cool? Cool.

It's not really "launched", it's in field trial - hence the limited invites.

Anyway, I'm on as a friend works for google and invited me (and seemingly most of my other friends too). No invites of own by the looks of it.

It's very facebook-like. Will give "hangouts" a go later, which seems to be the only feature it offers over facebook. Not sure how I feel about my gmail account getting tied into all this stuff.
