Doesn’t he live in Scotland so it’s too far to travel? Which is why he quit in the first place

Is that the reason? I know it originally was, just seems a little odd, can't stay in a hotel for a few weeks

I wonder if they asked Hattie Hayridge? Surely they're not both unavailable.

This was one of the worst episodes of Red dwarf I've ever seen. Just painfully unfunny.

Apparently he'll be in the last episode:

I gave up on Red Dwarf once Kochanski came back, ruined the dynamic.

Maybe wrap a spoiler tag around that and note that it's a spoiler for the last episode?

It never recovered once series 7 happened without Rimmer and too much Kochanski (plus only 1 of them writing).

It never really recovered from when Doug Naylor went it alone. It really seemed to forget what the premise of the show was (the last human alone in space), it really seems to have forgotten now in the massive populated universe.

Only seen the first two episodes so far and am mildly impressed. The second episode had a proper old school kind of story. Quite liked that one. Still nothing compared to the first 6 series.

Episode 4 was a bit of a nostalgia fest! References to early series galore, quite enjoyed it!

I am disappointed in that last year the series was the best in had ever been since season 6, this year it feels tired, roping out old jokes and I would have to rewatch it but didn't Lister successfully jam ok with Hitler in the first ep? Sounded ok to me, every ep since has had jokes about how he just can't play the guitar.

I know both seasons were filmed back to back so the perceived drop in quality astounds me, perhaps because I expected a lot less going into it last year, but i remember some good material.

I stopped watching at season 8. I remember 7 was rubbish and 8 was a kind of return to form. Is it worth catching up?

Well considering I regard 8 as he nadir of awfulness and Season 7 had a couple of gems (JFK and the RImmer ride) I am obviously not the right person to ask.

I personally would say skip to last years, season 11 and see how you get on

In my opinion, maybe try the new series but don't expect too much. The ones between it and series 8 are awful.

I think low expectations is the way to go, they are perfectly watchable, but if it wasn't a return for a much loved series, nobody would be watching it. That being said I've never found any episode unwatchable, I really do Red Dwarf, but S7 and 8 were low points. Too much budget, not enough laughs.

M-Corp was a good episode, and what an ending, will it continue from here?

Last nights ep was the first one I've liked this year. Yeah the jokes are a bit rough in places and reminiscent of past glories (talking toaster, Balance of Power) but I generally enjoy talking appliances, although Hitch-hikers still wins with its lift with vertigo. I enjoyed this story with the election campaign, was good silly fun.

The manipulation twist raised a genuine chuckle.. If you take the first 5-10 mins of each week and bash them together, then we might get one good episode from this season.

Really enjoyed last night as well - showed the characters (their flaws) at their best. And was great to hear David Ross do Talkie Toaster again

I really liked it as well, it was a nod to the old times and some evidence they've not forgotten the initial stuff, murdering everyone, etc.
