Graham Norton down to 99p each - recommended!

So Me

Quote:
  • A hugely engaging account of his life that is written with the same breezy bravura that he exhibits on telly ... There are points in the book when I found myself laughing out loud, and others when I was unusually moved ... Celebrity memoirs are rarely as genuine or as generously candid (Herald)
  • A frank, funny and sometimes tortured autobiography (Andrew Billen, The Times)
  • Honest and entertaining ... he uses his quick wit and humour to amuse the reader from start to finish (The Sun)
The Life and Loves of a He Devil

Witty and wonderful memoir. Sparkling and impish, as you'd imagine. (Daily Mail)

#3 from Paul O'Grady, now dropped to 99p - recommended, even if you're only mildly intrigued, and this sounds like the best of a good bunch (4.7/5, 900 reviews) -
Quote:
  • "As a narrator, stroppy of tongue but melting of heart, O'Grady still charms and tickles. The comic scenes with his truly mythological mum can touch the hem of Alan Bennett's robe... Leaves most fiction and history of the era in the dust." (Independent)
  • "O'Grady has a playwright's ear for dialogue, and his salty descriptions of raucous gigs in rundown pubs are a rude delight." (Independent)
  • "Paul O'Grady's life has already filled two excellent volumes... Still Standing is another enjoyable and colourful read." (Sunday Times)
  • "Honest, funny and supremely readable." (Sunday Express)

As a thriller it was pretty good. Although nowadays these things seem to be a little dated when they took about bank robberies and so forth. But certainly worth a read.

Ken Follett seems to have gone a little upmarket with his Cathedral and Century Trilogy, but thesen airport thrillers are usually pretty good. I'd read one of them (there are lots), just because he's a good writer and I've not read one I haven't enjoyed.

Only the second time at 99p since 2012, for Paul O'Grady's vol2 -
  • 2008 - At My Mother's Knee
  • 2010 - The Devil Rides Out @ 99p
  • 2012 - Still Standing: The Savage Years
  • 2015 - Open the Cage, Murphy!
  • 2017 - Paul O'Grady's Country Life

Quote:
  • "If you only buy one celeb memoir this year, make it this one." (News of the World)
  • "Far and away the best writer of the lot ... his turn of phrase is a joy." (The Sunday Times)
  • "Even funnier and more touching than the million-selling first volume. I defy anyone not to enjoy this book." (Jilly Cooper Daily Telegraph)
  • "...he writes so well, and takes you so skilfully into disparate Merseyside and London subcultures." (John Dugdale Guardian)
  • "O'Grady has subversively used his celebrity clout to write a real autobiography, quite simply - detailed, fluent and engaging, quite remarkably showing sustained and sympathetic interest in all the people he knew ... strikingly original, a rewarding read whether or not you're a big O'Grady fan already." (David Sexton London Evening Standard)

I'm a big Ruby Wax fan, and can recommend her books. She's very candid about mental health and depression, very readable and entertaining too.

This has never been below a fiver, and just now dropped to 99p -

How to Be Human: The Manual - by Ruby Wax - 4.7/5, 190 reviews

Quote:
With this marvellous book, Ruby Wax has confirmed her position as one of the most readable, inspirational and engaging writers in the field of human mental health, happiness and fulfilment. (Stephen Fry)

How to Be Human is, without exaggeration, a lifeline; wise, practical and funny, it is a handbook for those in despair. It is actually for everyone alive, for the curious, or disillusioned or muddled or just plain happy. (Joanna Lumley)

A three way encounter between a Monk, a neuroscientist and Ruby Wax sounds like the set up for a joke. Instead it's produced one of the most fascinating, intriguing and informative books about minds and bodies and brains and mindfulness I've ever encountered. A triangulation on what it means to be human. Utterly readable and surprisingly wise. (Neil Gaiman)
