MS Technet: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Beta

Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Beta

Please Note: This early release of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta is not available for home users. The SP1 Beta does not provide new end-user features, and installation is not supported by Microsoft.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta helps keep your PCs and servers on the latest support level, provides ongoing improvements to the Windows Operating System (OS), by including previous updates delivered over Windows Update as well as continuing incremental updates to the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platforms based on customer and partner feedback, and is easy for organizations to deploy a single set of updates.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta will help you:

Keep your PCs supported and up-to-date
Get ongoing updates to the Windows 7 platform
Easily deploy cumulative updates at a single time
Meet your users' demands for greater business mobility
Provide a comprehensive set of virtualization innovations
Provide an easier Service Pack deployment model for better IT efficiency

In order to download and install the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta you must currently have a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 already installed.

Anyone tried this yet?

Am just interested in the RemoteFX stuff really - not sure whether it's worth testing at home (although supposedly Microsoft say it's not for home testing).

Download links from techpowerup forums:

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 32-bit (537.8 MB)

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit (903.2 MB)

Edit: For the majority of people please download via Windows Update instead!

Nicked from figgy over at neowin:

Quote:
After installation run

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

from a elevated command prompt to cleanup all the backed-up windows files.
That reclaims about 3GB of diskspace
The above process takes a while, wait until it returns:

"Service Pack Cleanup operation completed.
The operation completed successfully."

Note above command removes the option to uninstall SP1.

Don't install if you use xpmode as you will then have to uninstall xpmode and virtual pc and reinstall just to get it to work again

I second the install from Windows Update if you can. It works out what updates you actually need and on a system fully up to date with security fixes it was only an 80mb download.

Thanks for that freeing up disk space tip! Once I'm sure its stable I'll be doing that. On an SSD so gb's are expensive!

Does anyone know if the MS Intellimouse drivers now work with SP1? I installed this before (I think it was that leaked RTM version) and I couldn't use my mouse properly.

There's about 80mb of changes beyond the security updates. It will include none security related bug fixes. I'm aware of at least 1 hotfix to the ahci driver and I assume there have been various other hotfixes to other parts of Windows.
There's no actual noticeable difference I have to say.

I've been quite happily using a MS Wheel Mouse Optical on generic drivers at work. As soon as SP1 installed it trundled off and installed the Intellimouse software and it seems to be working fine.

In the download section for MS virtual PC there's an extra section for UPDATE for those who don't have SP1 installed which might have solved it if applied before hand.
It threw up a reference to an update when I ran XP mode after installation then kept crashing out claiming the hardware integration had been disabled and demanding I login
