Fade to Grey - crap/not crap?

Just heard Dave Pearce playing this on 6 Music.. I know Midge Ure is a bit of a ****, but this is a bloody good tune that doesn't sound like it's aged at all. No?

It sounds old to me, but that because it's old. Midge Ure makes great mash though.

Nah, it's a good tune. I remember hearing it while wandering about a quiet part of Ibiza Town a couple of years back and it sounded good. Stands up quite well to, say, Sebastien Tellier's stuff and is better than a lot of electronic pop released these days.

I can't help thinking of the video when I hear the song...and the video has REALLY dated badly.
The tune's ok, but not as good as I'm In Love With A German Filmstar by The Passions.

I don't remember the video. It's the kind of track I would have hated as a kid, anyway. Probably too busy listening to Duran Duran and Wham.

(Though actually Club Tropicana is a good Ibiza tune. )

Still listening to Dave Pearce and he's just put on Sweet Harmony.

Watch it on youtube (from behind the sofa!) if you want the track ruined for you
Think of lots of men dressed like poncy clowns looking dead serious about life.

I don't think a single person has ever admitted to liking Visage have they?

Not even Steve Strange...

Great tune - even if it does rip off 'Being Boiled' by the Human League.

I think five or six years ago it would have sounded painfully dated, however we've been subjected to such a procession of cheesy 80s revivalists in the last few years, this sort of thing's come full circle. Personally I always thought it was guff.

I think Midge Ure was only involved in the production, so the song itself probably isn't really his fault.

It was great pop music at the time and it is still great pop music - dunno about Midge Ure though, obviously his solo career was appalling but Ultravox were alright.

Not Crap.

There are current 'scene' bands who would kill to have made the song in the first place. Yes, I'm looking at you Empire of The Sun, Sebastian Tellier and pretty much any Twelves remix.

Favourite 80s memory: Midge Ure on some Saturday morning kids show, appearing from behind the scenes to lose the rag with the panel who'd just dissed one of his videos. "Alright, you can say you don't like the song, but there's NO WAY you can think the video is rubbish!"
