[MULTI] DOOM 4 - Announced

Well I hope its better than Doom 3. Get rid of all that darkness and get more monsters on screen.

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52560

id Software today announced that it has begun production on Doom 4, and is now in the process of expanding its internal team of developers to work on the shooter sequel.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a release.

"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

The company is currently accepting applications to fill job openings covering roles such as producer, lead designer, and lead animator, among others.

The job listings page indicates that applicable platforms for the positions are PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Though no further details on the game were released, the studio will likely make use of its new id Tech 5 engine for the project.

id Software lead artist Kevin Cloud recently told Shacknews that one of the strengths of the company's new engine is its cross-platform performance.

"You don't even have to worry about how it's going to look on PS3 or 360. Right now we've got it running cross-platform running 60 hertz, and it looks really good," said Cloud. "In terms of what artists are available to achieve--it's something you have to see for yourself. I can say this, but you still won't get it until you see it."

I hated Doom 3 - monster closets galore.

Still being worked on. I guess Doom 4 is the game after that.

Some one posted the same thing in the Shacknews thread. Please don't be all dark Doom 4.

meh, i hate to say it, but the doom franchise has surely had it's day now. Unless they do something spectacular to revolutionise it, i just don't see it comparing to or competing with other modern shooters.

Have to say I actually enjoyed Doom 3 and played it through to the end, something I don't often do. When you reached Hell it was particularly excellent.

I skipped Doom3 completely, and my only interest in this is how well the console versions will compare to the pc.

I loved Doom 3. Was terrified the whole way through it.

Sounds good to me, did enjoy Doom 3 but not as much as the first 2 primarily because it didnt have coop and loads of monsters to contend with.

Mind you I just wish they would get Doom sorted on XBLA so I could play it online without it being a jerk-o-fest.

I think that award goes to Unreal 2 from me. I even tried installing it multiple times to see if I was wrong at how bad it had been before, but I soon found out I'd been right.

I played through Doom 3 and the expansion, and it was a grind for most of that time. Most I could muster in a session was 30-45 mins. It just got too samey and predictable and contrived. Resurrection of Evil was better, with the hellstone malarky, and as said Doom 3 picked up when you got to Hell, although not by much imo.

id need to pick up their game. I know they're serving a particular audience, but they're in danger of becoming a moribund cliche, a sad old man dancing at the side of the FPS dancefloor.

Quake 4 was woeful (I know they didn't dev it, but it's still their IP). So retro that 1997 rang me personally and asked for its game back. Quake and Doom seem to have blended together, pointlessly.

Quake 4 was the first FPS I tried for my spanking new 360. Its lucky I didnt take the whole bundle back to the shops.

The way it consistently manages to drop frames even when nothing's happening onscreen is particularly impressive. Rivalled only by Mass Effect chugging during its end title sequence.

Doom3 is a bit "meh" if you don't play it in the right conditions. I once played it late at night in the dark with a pair of headphones on with loads of space behind me and it was absolutely awesome.

I actually liked Quake 4, only as a drop-in drop-out game mind.

Doom3 was definitely a trouser-fudger when played in the dark, but got far too repetitive & I gave up before the end.

Not sure where they can take the franchise, we have Deadspace & the Aliens FPS coming soon which already look like expanding on the Doom game-mechanic.

I agree, it took me months to complete because I could only ever be bothered to play it thirty minutes or so at a time.

Nowhere really, Id are hardly innovators when it comes to taking the genre somewhere new. I imagine it'll be little better than a glorious tech demo (which is how I've always regarded Doom3 really, despite the good scares and atmosphere).
