hitachi analogue plasma can i connect hdmi dvd player using a signal converter?

problem 42 inch hitachi pma400e only suitable connection 3 seperate component phonos. want to connect dvd player using hdmi socket can this be done if it can will i be able to acess the dvd upscaler chip to get 720p or 1080i for abetter picture quality then using just component to component on both plasma and dvd player . do signal converters work or not i know keene electronics sell them what do you think.
