Peter Dinklage has been cast as Tyrion! He was pretty much ever fan's dream casting so the series is off to a fantastic start.

I wish Martin would hurry up with Book 5.

I guess we'll see A Game of Thrones on TV late next year or early 2011? Damn that's a long wait.

You can't rush these things.

Wow, I read Game of Thrones after this was announced. I can't believe how little progress has been made since then - expected it to either have been greenlit or dumped altogether.

Haven't gotten around to reading any of the other novels yet, but looks like there's no rush.

Yep that's definitely a good bit of casting. It's only the pilot that's been given the go-ahead so far though isn't it? Fingers-crossed it's a success and the series is given the green-light.

Sex, swearing and violence - if they get that sorted, and don't water down the (very) unsavoury elements, then it'll be a winner.

There was a writers strike on, created a huge delay.

I'm tired of people banging on about these books. Will check them out in the bookshop today and see what the big deal is.

Anyone point me in the right direction for a shortened version of this first book or somewhere online to read a detailed synopsis.

One of my kids is auditioning for the show but I'll never get him to read the full book in a couple of days.

There is also a character by character guide which tells you which chapters each character appears in. The whole site is quite impressive, as it lets you change the scope to cover as many books as you wish, so a reader part way through the series is not spoilered.

Good luck with the audition.

Excellent, exactly the sort of thing I was after.
Thanks a lot.

Here's something further from a blogger at a Finnish Science Fiction convention where G. R. R. Martin is attending:
Quote:
Casting is currently under way, and they are very serious about this. They are even holding casting sessions in Australia...Filming will be taking place in Northern Ireland, actually in a studio on the site of the old Harland & Wolff ship yard where, as George noted, they built The Titanic. HBO will not make a decision about the series, or even screening the pilot, until after the pilot has been shot. As George explained, some pilots never even get shown. But hopefully this one will and a series will follow.

George was also asked why he started such a huge fantasy series. He said that after years in Hollywood he got fed up with being told that his ideas were too big and expensive to film, so he decide to go back to books where he could have whatever ideas he wanted. The irony is that now those big ideas will be filmed, but of course technology has moved on a lot in the last decade (hello Weta).

Fixed.

I'm just praying that they do the books justice. I can't wait to see it brought to life on TV, but with these things there's always the risk that it's going to change the way we each "see" that world ourselves... I'm glad it's HBO/BBC with the rights anyway!

An interesting thing I've come across in regards to that; because the books are written in such a vivid, descriptive and film-like manner I've found that most readers generally "see" the world in a very similar way. Look at any of the art produced, either professionally or by fans, and it's 99% of the time exactly what I had pictured. Also look at the lists people compile of their dream actors for the roles and so many will match up.

I never read the books.

I hope it is going to be something like Rome.

If it remains faithful to the books, it will make Rome look like Emmerdale in Togas.

Newest rumour is that Sean Bean has been cast as Eddard Stark. That would pull in the viewing figures if true (although maybe would fix Lord of the Rings too firmly in people's pre-conceptions).
