Concur with everything that's already been said. Much of the first ep was spent setting stuff up, but some great individual scenes and performances nevertheless - Sean Bean always comes across rather wooden, but I thought he was particularly great in the scene with his wife and Maester Luwin where suspicions of murder etc are discovered.

The one thing that threw me was the casting of Robb Stark - when he appeared I thought it was Theon Greyjoy - the character didn't seem to jump out as I thought he would....I assume that's not a spoiler - I've got a bit paranoid now

Who the hell played the diplomat that was assisting the targayens?? - it's driving me mad trying to remember what he's been on

Oh, and was Viserys played by the same guy who was good as the villain in the 'Family of Blood' Dr Who episode - looked like a dead ringer

Watched it last night and enjoyed it. Obviously a lot of setting up but it introduced the new characters, I followed what was going on and who people were (I've never read the books). Can't wait to see more.

I agree with avid fan. Sean Bean usually annoys the hell out of me, but I think his performance in this is wonderfully measured.

And how creepy is Viserys? After the bathing scene and he establishes himself as her brother, my wife was stunned!!!

I've never been anywhere near the books but I enjoyed this and look forward to watching the rest. Given the hype I'll try to take it on its merits rather than place my expectations too highly, but it was a good start and HBO is of course always worth the effort. 12 years might be pushing it slightly though...

After initial concerns, ratings look to be good!

Record viewing for Sky Atlantic:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...ngs?CMP=twt_fd

Much better figures (4.2m) than originally thought in the US, and not including DVR figures either:

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/04/19/ga...miere-ratings/

Plus another 1.2m for repeat viewings.

It's all looking positive - no wonder a new 10-episode second series has already been commissioned

Thought this was great - not been near the books so prob won't come back in here for fear of spoilers but a brilliant first episode. Not at all confusing, I assume it gets confusing, but pretty much every character was well established and set up - no, I can't name all five sons but I know there are five sons and they each have a wolf, that's enough for now and I got straight away what was going on at the end - nothing like The Wire where you have to watch it twice. I'm already hooked.

Well, I've never read the books, and I think I got a bit lost. Can someone confirm if I understand things right so far?

Is this about it? Should I be reading the books first?

Imagine that Sean Bean's family rule the equivalent of Scotland pre-united Kingdom.

Now imagine Mark Addy is Queen Elizabeth, and she's left Sean Bean as a 'protector'/Lord to look over all the northerners. His job is to protect the land immediately south of the Wall (north of which are wild folk even more savage than the Scots)

Hope that clarifies things

If Viserys is the white haired brother, who married his sister off. He is played by Harry Lloyd. He played Will Scarlet in The TV robin hood series ( 2006) I think he did creeepy, v-well!

He did appear in a DH ep. ( about school boys training for the first world war? )

That's a real help, thanks. I might print this off and keep it with me, just for reference...

Surely a better analogy is the wall being Hadrian's Wall keeping the savage Picts at bay. Sean Bean being some local Roman prefect south of the wall.

Just to clarify, what was the wall at the start? The barrier between icy and forest? Is Sean Bean on the forest side, or the icy side? What side is the nasty boob-touching brother on?

Thanks.
