Literally counting the days. Nearing the end of reading the first book. Did over 100 pages in one sitting the other day, gonna be so awesome to see the big moments play out in the flesh.

So excited now..

Having a look over the cast at
HTML Code:
Winter is Coming

I hadn't appreciated how this is almost entirely a british cast list, with so many recognisable faces throughout. Beyond the main cast, the guys for Master Lewin and Wlader frey are so spot on...and they've even got Clive mantle (Little John and Casualty) as the GreatJon!!

I notice the guy playing Hodor is a N Irish DJ with his first acting job (as are a number of the cast - Ilyn payne "is an English guitarist and songwriter, particularly associated with the UK rhythm and blues band, Dr. Feelgood in the 1970s") - the lucky get...at least he won't have trouble remembering his lines

Also impressive they found someone bigger than Rory mcCann (the Hound) to play 'The Mountain That Rides'

Some good articles on the Guardian site.

Barbarians at the Gate.

Getting more from George RR Martin.

Photo Gallery.

Explaining the gap since the last book:

Quote:
The reason fans have been driven so wild over the six-year delay is because the fourth and fifth books were meant to be one. The sheer size of A Feast for Crows forced the author to split the narrative in two, meaning that some of the viewpoints of Martin's best characters – the scheming dwarf Tyrion Lannister, the dragon princess Daenerys – are missing, to be revealed in A Dance with Dragons.
Makes the mind boggle at how big the next, and final, two will be?

This from the (glowing) review from TIME:

Quote:
Martin, 62, has written four of a planned seven novels; the fifth is due in July, six years after its predecessor. He says he can keep pace with HBO if--a big if--it devotes two seasons to the massive third volume and three in total to the fourth and fifth (whose narratives overlap), as he hopes. If not? "Then yeah, they may catch up with me."

Some of the characters in that list don't actually feature in the 1st book, unless they have put some of the chapters/story from the 2nd book into this first series?

Agree there is some great casting in though, i hadn't realised it was Charles Dance as Lord Tywin Lannister and James Cosmo as Jeor Mormont can't wait to see those two. From the previews/making of clips i've seen Viserys seems very well realised and Jerome Flynn as Bronn seemed suprisingly awesome.

They just need to get Mark Strong as Stannis and Robert Carlyle as Davos for the 2nd season.

Excellent calls - especially Stannis.

Charles Dance is great casting, but I thought Tywin would be bigger built - and unless I imagined it he has huge red sideburns covering half his face

The US press are all raving about it & they've had the first six episodes to help generate their responses. The consensus is that the first episode is the poorest of the six, but only due to the lengthy character intros/setting the scene.

Apparantly there is only going to be 1 ad break during the Sky showing , there has been a press showing and somebody from Sky mentioned that

Blimey! ... If the US press think the opener is the poorest episode of the half-dozen they've seen, we are in for a treat. Despite having high expectations, this already exceeds them. Looks great, performances are solid across the board, everyone looks/acts like I imagined them from the books & it does a fine job introducing everyone without too much obvious exposition. Best thing I can say is it made a 60min episode feel like 30. I want more NOW!!!

Plenty of lovely HBO naaaakedness too. How old is Daenerys supposed to be?!?

In the first book she is about 14/15 but in the TV adaption i'm pretty sure they have upped her age by a few years to make her closer to 18 i'd guess (they have done the same thing with most of the Stark children too.)

After all the enthusiastic reviews... I need a bit more convincing. Solid acting and blatantly no expense spared, but the first episode was nowhere near the slam dunk I was looking for.

I think that they've gotten Jaime wrong so far. Admittedly it's early days yet, but he's meant to be a a really arrogant shallow ******* who nevertheless becomes probably the most complex character in the whole thing. Plus the actor doesn't look like I imagined Jaime to be. Call me picky if you like, but this is a really pivotal character we're talking about here.
