If you start reading now you may just about finish in time for the next book in the series in July (apparently...)

They're not really like any other fantasy that I've read, and stand apart. The word that most springs to mind is "gritty". It's very dark, very adult and very complex at times but with a lot of action and very very good characters.

I would definitely recommend reading them, but possibly wait until you've seen some of the show.

By far the gritiest fantasy I've read, and probably the most complex.

Any Berserk readers on here that have read the books? I'm tempted to pick them up after hearing they're a little like a tamer, more grounded kindred spirit to that Manga serial, but I'm a little hesitant to get stuck into another long-running series that has an ultra-slow drip-feed release rate!

Really looking forward to the HBO production regardless!

Over the past week or so, HBO have been releasing a number of video features which are designed to introduce newcomers to characters, houses and geography of the show. They're pretty great and there's quite a bit of new footage in them.

Invitation to Westeros

House Stark
House Targaryen
House Lannister and House Baratheon

Stark Portraits: Ned Stark
Stark Portraits: Catelyn Stark
Stark Portraits: Robb Stark
Stark Portraits: Arya Stark
Stark Portraits: Bran Stark
Stark Portraits: Sansa Stark
Stark Portraits: Jon Snow

Lannister Portraits: Jaime Lannister
Lannister Portraits: Cersei Lannister
Lannister Portraits: Tyrion Lannister
Lannister Portraits: King Robert Baratheon
Lannister Portraits: Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish

Targaryen Portraits: Daenerys Targaryen
Targaryen Portraits: Viserys Targaryen
Targaryen Portraits: Khal Drogo

Not sure I got all of them, but it's a good start.

Positive review from Hollywood Reporter.

Barely a few minutes into HBO’s epic Game of Thrones series, it’s clear that the hype was right and the wait was worth it.

This is being shown only 1 day after the states over here , but obviously due to the different time zones it will be less than 24 hrs , ....will this thread still be full of spoilers before it is shown on sky....???? and who will be the first forumite to say its crap ? .....answers on a postcard

HBO aired the first 15 minutes of the first episode as a preview last night (Sky Atlantic will also show this). Absolutely stunning - exceeds my expectations in almost every way possible.

I'd suggest we have a separate thread (with spoilers) for people that have read the books, and one for those that haven't - similar to the Walking Dead threads.

This looks fantastic! I'm rereading the first book, and have to say that those first 15 minutes are much spot-on. Can't wait for this series to start!

Since it's just one day different, why not update the first post to recommend UK viewers avoid the thread on whatever day of the week it is? A split discussion is surely worse than having to avoid the thread one day a week for the duration of the series.

It's not the airing dates that are the issue, it's whether or not people have read the books. Those of us that have are going to know what happens, and if you get people who've read the books making comments like (and I'm using a made-up example here) 'Wow, the actor playing Ebeneezer is great. Shame he's going to die in a helicopter crash soon', those who haven't may be somewhat upset. Not sure what the best way to handle it is though.

George R R Martin's "Game of Thrones" coming to HBO!!!

Change the thread title to add "no book spoilers" or create another thread for folk who haven't read the books.

You're right -- I misread the post I was replying to! Book readers in one thread and non-readers in another would certainly make sense.

Because that worked fantastically well in the Walking Dead thread.

It did more or less. Some cocks posted a few spoilers but most people stuck to the plan.
