Canon f1.8 50mm lens : is the picture in the 1st post the best i should expect?

Still trying to get to grips with the new 50mm lens on my 350d.

a lot of the pictures are coming out slightly blurry because of the slow shutter speed i think (probably do with upping the ISO to 800 indoors?). I am a newbie to SLR's and still 'point and shoot', but experiment with settings. I am finding indoors it tends to requie a longer exposure time than i would expect (however ISO is at either 400 or 200, should i use 800 or even 1600 for indoors to reduce exposure time?)

However one or two shots today (out of a lot!) seem to show a level of detail that this lens is renowned for (i think).

so the image below is a 1:1 cropped part of an image that has been untouched, is this what i should expect out of the lens for the detail it will pick up?

The detail and resolving power of the lens varies depending on the aperture you use....if this shot is wide open at f/1.8 and is a 100% crop then it seems pretty decent to me. Stop the lens down to f/2.5 and you will see a good improvement in sharpness.

Indoors I expect to use iso400 and above, and I try to make the exposure time be anything faster than 1/50s, although this will show up blur on moving things, so 1/250s ++ is better.
