Unhappy So, are the new R2 DVD releases of 'Shivers' and 'Rabid' censored?

THE BBFC website lists a shorter running time for the recently classified Metrodome versions of these films. Has Metrodome pre-cut both titles or what?

"Rabid" is certainly uncut as far as I can see, comparing it to previous video releases, pre-VRA and 1998 "18", and the Channel 4 version shown earlier this year.

Ta Mike.

Any ideas regarding the discrepancy with the running time though?

How about Shivers?

The earlier releases were sourced and converted from a NTSC master, hence runs to the correct cinema running time. The new version came from a PAL master, hence the 4% loss in running time.

Conversions from NTSC masters are not uncommon. For a well-known example, compare the running times of the first release of the Aliens Special Edition to the later releases.

Just thought I'd bump this as I've just gone for them as they're both £6.49 each at play.com

Damn hadn't noticed there were discrepancies in run-time, I've just ordered the R2's and was about to sell off my R1's, I'll have to compare em first now methinks

Conversions from NTSC masters and a PAL master would be identical running times whether it's converted from 24fps film to NTSC master and then to PAL, or direct from 24fps to PAL. Either way it's 1fps(4%) faster. Virtually no PAL DVD runs at the correct 24fps film rate (even if some are pitch corrected so sound correct).

The discrepancy at the BBFC may be a comparison between the cinematic release and a video release (PAL). It could also be down to other material submitted including comany logos and endless copyright messages in a dozen different languages (typical with PAL DVDs).

As far as I know, neither of these films are cut in the UK.

The Cronenberg films from Prism (as I think they now are) are definitely uncut. By the standards of present day horror, there's not a great deal to cut.
