First of all welcome to computers.

There are several programs but Microsoft Media player will usually be sufficent. Unless the avi has a more exotic codec. If thats the case a quick search on google usually finds the codec that will sort you out.

well AVI is just a container, it stands for Audio Video Interleave. it could be one of many dozens of codecs. your best bet is to download a program called G-Spot that'll identify what codec is necessary, then you can google it and download it. then most media players will play it back without a problem, personally i suggest Media Player Classic (google it) as its pretty natty and has great options for audio switching, a/r correction etc

I think if you are a newbie to video files and codecs then Windows Media Player 9+ is probably the best option.
It will download codecs automaticall etc.

Although personally I would recommend Media Player Classic (nothing to do with Microsoft)

does that ever work? whenever i've tried it it just says error connecting to codec server and just plays the sound.

if the avi file won't play in WMP then try the DIVX player, that'll most likely work best with avi files. If that doesn't work do a search on google and d/l Nimos Codec Pack, that contains almost all the codecs you'll ever need.

I dont think it will download the DivX codec but most of the popular codecs work. Although I havent tried for a while, like I said previously I use Media Player Classic to play nearly everything (including DivX stuff)
