You can create junctions in XP, just need to to it at the command line with a utility such as the System Internals one:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896768.aspx

You would create a normal top directory (equivalent to the library in Win7) something like "all my mp3s" and under there you would create two junctions, for example music1 pointing to the top directory of the first lot of mp3s, and a second junction music2 pointing at the top directory of the second lot.

Then you should find that most applications that you point at "all my mp3s" will traverse through the two junctions and see all the files below as if they are all in that one directory, the file system should hide their true location from the app.

Thanks all for your suggestions, it sounds like the junctions points should do the job so I'll give that a shot, apologies if I don't get back to you soon and let you know though...baby no.2 is imminent so no time to test!

ObjectDock v2.0 released

ObjectDock v2.0 released

● Brand New UI & simplified menus
● New icon effects

● New “Folder-View” tabs (Windows 7)
● Quickly rearrange your tabs by drag & drop

As seen on BBC's 'Click' program - Soluto will clean up your startup apps & services based on previous actions & advice from other users.

Now don't let that put you off - I keep quite a close eye on my own startup, using ccleaner's tool and MSconfig on occasion, and have WinPatrol permanently monitoring.

Remember MS Bootvis ? It's a bit like that, only lots better ! The gui is quite unlike anything I've seen before (and I've used 100's of free/shareware tools over the years) - very smooth & slick, plus lots of useful extra info as & when you need it.

New users - the app will hold your hand and advise you constructively, but of course if you dive in you could damage your o/s startup. And advanced users can have a dig into some of the lesser known (for me at least) o/s services and see what they do, before deciding whether to remove them or delay startup.

Can you tell that I like it ? Soluto shaved 21s off my bootup ! Recommended.

Qttabbar

http://qttabbar.sourceforge.net/

I believe the work on this application stopped but has since been renewed and now works perfectly. If your fed up with how basic windows explorer is then this is brilliant answer.

http://www.umplayer.com/

this media player is really good as its one of the few that downloads all the codecs needed and has played everything I've tried with it.

Is that just a tabbar for explorer? Or is there more to it?

Thats exactly what it is but its very powerful with lots of options. This link is a little out of date as it covers an older version but this gives an idea of what it can do.

Can anyone recommend a good sync app for syncing with external HDD.

I'm using dropbox to sync between computers but am using an extrrnal HDD at work (security wont allow dropbox). I'm therefore having to remember to having to drag and drop updated files when I get home.

Thanks

If you're using Windows, SyncToy or Robocopy.

Radio Downloader http://www.nerdoftheherd.com/tools/radiodld/

Downloads radio programmes available on iPlayer even if they aren't podcasted. It has a "subscribe" function which does the same as a reader and just downloads the next programme as it becomes available. Great for serials or regular listens. Bit rate, format conversions and destination folder configs also available.

You might also find the MP3DirectCut http://mpesch3.de1.cc/ utility useful for top & tailing the resulting or any other MP3's.

Clover (2mb) - looks to be one of those apps that should by now be part of the os -

Quote:
Clover is a user-friendly application that is meant to make your computer's Windows Explorer resemble Chrome, by adding tabs.

After you install Clover, you will be able to open multiple folders within the same window, and you can also add folder bookmarks.
