according to this (good read) - http://www.matousec.com/projects/win...ts-results.php

the best free XP firewall is Online Armor - http://www.tallemu.com/downloads.html

XP/NT/2000 only, not Vista (and note the known compat probs with F-Secure & ad-muncher).

I've had problems with Kerio not auto-starting on reboot (known issue apparently, without a fix) and Comodo has been driving me mad lately (not least 'cos of a 50% cpu SYSTEM process when running p2p) so looking for a change.

I'm downloading now (15mb) - anyone used this yet ?
Interesting read, thanks for posting those links...

I just switched to Comodo since PC Tools Firewall+ went loopy and lunched the laptop's Explorer.exe (for what reason I've absolutely no idea). It is niggly to start to use but once set up I've found it brilliant....(used in conjunction with Avast / Spybot / Ad-Aware)

I've never found Comodo to use that much processing oomph, more than PCTools but nothing constrictive at all.

It's a great read if you use XP but it doesn't appear to cover Vista

The Windows XP firewall doesn't rate at all and although the Windows Vista firewall is supposed to be better it doesn't give you much confidence

I see Comodo can work with Vista so I might give it a go.

Microsoft's Synctoy v2.0 is now out of beta - look out for the comment about updating all your existing syncs before running - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...ng=en#filelist - SyncToy helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers quickly and easily.

We have collected feedback from the discussion forum on the Windows XP Professional Photography web site, from customer feedback surveys, from a large number of professional and hobbyist photographers at Microsoft, and from various world-wide forums, sites, reviews and blogs on the web. Based on your feedback, the following features were added to this release of SyncToy:

* Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.

* True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.

* Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.

* Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).

* Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.

* Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.

* Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.

* Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.

* Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.

* Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.

* 64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.

* Folder pair rename

* Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.

* Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.

* Setup Improvements: Integrated setup with single self-extracting archive file and no extra downloads if you already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Enabled silent install for the SyncToy Installer file (see readme.txt file for more information). Removed combine and subscribe actions.

* Removed combine and subscribe actions.

Copernic Desktop Search - new version 3.0 - http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/ (auto-uninstalls old version, but maintains indexing)

invaluable for finding emails, docs, etc instantly, by filename or content

Copernic is free too (or at least the free version is, for home use !)

I've tried Google & Copernic at 2 different times on 2 different machines, and much prefer copernic - if you are a big user of desktop search then you can always give it a go. Yahoo (now "X1") was always my fave, but it's no longer free.

I haven't tried GDS for a couple of years but when I switched to Copernic it was hands down better in every way.

I've tested Comodo on Vista (Basic & Home Premium) and it seems to work just as well as on XP. Have been impressed with it so far...

Can anyone recommend a free "save as PDF" type plugin for Office 2003? I know there's a microsoft plugin for 2007 that does the job...

^^ This is the one I tend to use (first) now, but it's no bad thing to try a few, 'cos considering it seems quite a simple job the options & ease-of-use (if you're doing loads) and even the end results vary quite a lot, ime.

What's the best free firewall these days? I was gonna get comodo but I still it now incluedes a antivirus checker as standard like AVG8. I was also wondering if windows firewall is good enough, I've noticed it doesn't seem to give you the option to block permissions in the same strict way zonealarm does. It seems to let out going stuff just do it's its thing.

You can enable the Windows Firewall on outbound traffic but it's nowhere near as easy to manage as something like Comodo (which is apparently why Microsoft turned it off on outbound stuff as they felt users wouldn't understand it).

I use Comodo just to keep tabs on all the stupid apps that try to auto-update every day these days!
