Free firewall

I can't see this one mentioned here, if it is and I've missed it, apologies. I came across this a couple of days ago and have been using it. Seems excellent. No adas, no nags and totally free for life.
Free comodo firewall at www.comodo.com

I've been using a licenced Zone alarm pro for years and as the licence is due again in a couple of weeks, I decided not to renew and use comodo. Easily set up, not disimilar to zone alarm in functions.

Hope this helps someone

I've recently found Lupas Rename to be very handy for renaming camera pics (it works with most/all file types).
It can either just rename them to say A1, A2, A3 etc, or by name+number, Name+date modified/created, or replace part of the existing filename.
For example with Canon camera pics you can select
"replace text", "IMG" and replace it with the string "Name_-->"
Which gives the result that IMG_0001 would come out as say
Name_2007_04_18_001.jpg (and it can do that to hundreds of files at a go).

It's got a number of other options, but that is the one I tend to use most

I want to find a program (free if possible) that will scan my entire hard disk for certain file types, make a copy into a new directory, and if the file name already exists in the new folder, then rename it iwth a [1] or something similar.

Windows search dies when trying to copy 7000 odd files and doesn't overwrite.

Browzar - IE based web browser with a very small footprint. Secure as it doesn't save your browsing/downloaded data.

WinAAM - http://www.withopf.com/tools/aam/ - sets hard drives acoustic management setting (faster/louder or slower/quieter) from within Windows.

Most drive companies provide their own tools to do this but they are dos based and don't always work with newer drives (sata etc.). This tool also works in Vista.

It won't work with all seagate drives as they stopped using the aam feature after losing a licencing dispute.

[XP only]

Along with their free AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware (save to Desktop) they're now doing a free AVG root-kit searcher

Handy little tool which is worth running past your PC. If you want to know what a root kit is there's info here

Hamachi www.hamachi.cc is a free VPN system from the people who brought us www.logmein.com. Easily creates a VPN for up to 16 PC's on the free version. Very secure and great for hosting a virtual LAN to play games with your mates.

Absolutely fantastic application remover for Windows. I can't praise it enough and it's freeware.
