Marillion

A friend of mine has got me a ticket for a warm up date at Aylesbury in April. Now I used to be a big fan of theirs when Fish used to be in the group but since he left I haven't followed their progress that much.Have any of you members seen them live with Hogarth on vocals?

I'm not a big fan, but I have seen them twice in the last few years and have 2 of their albums.

I cant compare the two singers, but their new stuff is good and I'm sure you'll enjoy it whether you liked the old 'band' or not.

Last time I saw them was a couple of times during the Brave tour.
They were great, and would def go to see them again.
Sound was spot on too.

I tell a fib, last time was on the This Strange Engine tour. Also awesome live.

I've seen them many times over the last few years and they never disappoint.

Of course, as it's a warm-up, it will be different from the rest of the tour. The band will be trying out the new material from Marbles and the show will still be a work in progress. That might mean an extended running time though.

Regardless, I'd jump at the chance if I was you.

I enjoy most live gigs, as long as the band have some sense of musicianship. Even enjoyed Cliff Richard once

Not desparately keen on post-Fish Marillion, but still worth a look.

(although a Fish gig would be better!)

I was a huge marillion fan when fish was with them, didn't like the first few albums released without him, but thought the last one was the best since clutching at straws, so much so, I paid nearly Ł30 on the official web site to pre-order the new album in a deluxe special edition with my name in the insert!

I think Afraid Of Sunlight would be a good place to start. And, of course, Marbles which comes out in May.

Hi,

Don't try Ice Cream Genius untill you get into H's voice, as above Afraid of Sunlight is a very good starting point, as is Anoraknaphobia. Brave is one of their best but I am told an atypical album.

Mike

PS I have BIG hopes for Marbles, mine is pre-orderd too, as was Anorak.

I've heard the retail version of Marbles (listening party a couple of weeks back) and it's pretty damn good. Can't wait for the double album version, which we should have in our mitts in about 3 weeks or so.

Hopefully I'll be at the warm up gig too, not to mention one or two of the other uk dates and probably a few european dates as well. Top live band

What does it sound like in terms of other albums?

Impossible to say after one listen on a bass-overheavy PA in a nightclub

Marillion albums nearly always take ages to shine IMO and at first listen it's kind of impossible to compare it to anything else. It ranges from catchy chart potential stuff (You're Gone, Don't Hurt Yourself) through laid back stuff (Angelina, which would fit nicely on Afraid Of Sunlight), epic (Neverland, which lives up to the potential shown on the live track released on the Christmas CD), bonkers (Drilling Holes) to harrowing stuff like Invisible Man (nearly 15 minutes of fabulous stuff).

And that's only some of the retail CD! There's much more to come on the double, including Ocean Cloud which is a good 20 minutes long
