Board game suggestions for kids (8yr & 4yr)

Looking for some suggestions for board games for kids. Over the last few years I've got my nephew the Junior editions of Carcassone, Catan and Ticket to Ride. They've been popular so I'm trying to think of new games for this Xmas. He turns 8 just a couple of days before Xmas.

I've had King of Tokyo and Jamaica on my shortlist for a couple of years now (just waiting til he's old enough) so they're my main choices right now. I don't play them myself though so just curious if they're good picks, what others I should consider.

Of course there's also the full editions of the games he already has.

Also looking for my 4yr old niece. Much harder proposition though as she already has access to the games I started my nephew on at around that age.

I know she really likes Carcassone and Catan with a little help. I got her the Disney Eye Found It last year which was popular.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

Board game suggestions for kids (8yr & 4yr)

8 and 4 is quite a big spread, the 8 yr old could be able to cope with a fair bit, whereas the 4 yr old may not be able to read yet.

The haba games are a good start point, animal upon animal, rhino hero, monza etc

Then the likes of Karuba are a step up, albeit likely to be too much for the younger one.

Carcassonne minus farmers is a good one to move up a little. Also could try Sushi go and Tsuro.

No Thanks!, For Sale, Incan Gold, the Mind, Deep Sea Adventure...all good stuff which mine were happily playing from 5

Were you looking for separate recommendations for both ages?

Yeah, sorry if that wasn't clear.

Labyrinth for the 4 year old? Or Bugs In The Kitchen, or Funny Bunny?

Exploding Kittens or Survive! Escape From Atlantis for the 8 year old?

For the 4 yr old I’d suggest the haba games, or maybe something more gamey like looping Louie

At 8 years you’ve got a huge choice, depends on what they’re into and what type of game would best fit. Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle would be a good pick for a Harry Potter fan, for example.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Plenty to look at already!

I've already got Labyrinth actually, forgot to mention that. It was really cheap recently so picked it up.

They already have Bugaloop as well so that's another one covered.

Having spent some time on Board Game Geek and watching videos my shortlists are:

4yrs:
Rhino Hero
Tsuro

In-between/joint: Labyrinth (already have it)

8yrs:
Sushi Go (probably the Party version, seems the same but with more options)
Takenoko
Jamaica
King of Tokyo
Kingdomino
Incan Gold
Survive Escape from Atlantis

Patchwork also seems highly rated and is interesting because it's a quick two player* game but none of the videos I've seen are exactly selling it to me.

*Number of players is a factor as it's generally just them and their parents or other family so 2-4 players is ideal. This is also why I've always tried to steer away from things like Loopin' Louie as it's really only good for a very specific age.

Incan Gold is one that looks good but maybe favours bigger groups.

King of Tokyo is awesome, but if say maybe in a year or two's time. Not a great 2 player, clicks at 3 or 4 players.

Survive Escape From Atlantis is a great game that we play with my 14 and 5 year old. Very nice wooden pieces too. Can be played easily with 2, 3 or 4 players.
Its a remake of an old 80s board game. Just wish they'd remake Valley of the Lost Dinosaurs too.

Camel Up is good fun, but I don't think it will hold the 4 year old attention.

Hive's a great 2 player. Like chess with bugs, but better. Again nice solid pieces, well presented and very portable.

I bought an original copy of escape from Atlantis on eBay. Loved it first time round and had to play it again.. It's a great game

Thanks again guys. I've given Survive Escape From Atlantis another look. It does look promising (really helps when you find a video that explains it clearly and isn't boring / annoying etc which is 95% of them IMO).

Also ended up watching another completely different one - Azul- which looks fun.

So much choice! On the plus side I get to buy the 8yr a couple of them as his birthday (he's turning 8) is just a few days before Xmas.

The only thing with Survive is it’s quite a mean game, so kids can need managing through the disappointments of their boat being sunk by a sea dragon a few steps from safety

I’d also recommend Magic Maze, which is a real time silent coop game. Brilliant fun.

2 of my shortlisted games were on Lightning Deals yesterday so today I received Kingdomino and Sushi Go Party. The latter had a dented tin and the manual inside was torn so that's going back for a replacement.

I've played a few rounds on Kingdomino though and definitely like that one. Easy to learn and quite a bit of strategy involved. Very easy to make a move and then see a better alternative soon after.

I still need to decide which others to get.

I wish Tsuro was cheaper. It looks great but the price seems high for what it is / what you get. Lightning deal maybe

Kingdomino is superb. Regularly played with 4/5 year olds in our family to good effect.

The replacement Sushi Go Party was all good so I've been testing that out. So far I've played the base game rules/cards and also their 'recommended for 2 players' version and they've both been good fun. Once you know the rules it's a quick game but one that keeps you thinking. Plenty of smiles already when you block or nullify cards and it's a game that I can see really coming alive with more people as there will be so much more going on.

I also bought Azul and that's very good. High production quality and lots of different strategies to consider (only to have them scuppered by your opponents). The very first moves are always interesting as there's just overwhelming choice. Works great as a 2-player game as well and I think with more it'll be even better.

I've also played Labyrinth and that's easily the weakest of the bunch. The concept is sound but the main issue was some very long turns where the player was trying to figure out their move. It honestly got a tad boring. We only played 2-player and it was almost like we were playing ourselves as we didn't affect the other that much. For that reason I think it's a game that will hopefully play better with 3-4. I also wonder if it's a game adults can over think, so will hopefully be better for the kids. The production quality of the set is also notably lower / cheaper.

Labyrinth was the only one where I didn't want to immediately play again.
