Talking ***Spyware / Anti-Virus / Firewall - Read Me First*** ***UPDATED***

Thought i'd make a thread about Computer Security as there seems to be a lot of threads about it recently.

Spyware Removal Tools

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well known anti-virus and anti-malware applications fail to detect. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they even start

ComboFix
Combofix is a freeware (a legitimate spyware remover created by sUBs), Combofix was designed to scan a computer for known malware, spyware (SurfSideKick, QooLogic, and Look2Me as well as any other combination of the mentioned spyware applications) and remove them.

Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware scans your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known datamining, aggressive advertising, and tracking components. Upon finding these components it will prompt you to remove them, make sure that all the boxes are ticked prior to removing. Also make sure that you update the ref file regularly.

Microsoft Security Essentials
Microsoft's program includes "real-time" protection that makes it far superior to the others.

a-squared
a-squared is a full tool to clean your computer from Malware. Not only Spywares, as detected by classic Anti-Spyware programs, but also especially Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers, Keyloggers and a lot of other destructive pests, which makes it dangerous to surf the web.

Spybot
Similar to Ad-Aware in that it searches your harddisk for so-called spy- or adbots. Again make sure that the program is updated regularly.

PrevX
Commercial: Safeguards your PC and personal information from theft and attack by Spyware, Rootkits, Trojans, Viruses, Bots, Adware and all other forms of malware and crimeware.

CWShredder
This tool gets rid of the CWS trojan that hijacks Internet Explorer start and search settings to one of several different web sites. Most of these web sites appear to have an affiliate relationship with coolwebsearch.com in which coolwebsearch pays them for every visitor they refer.

HijackThis
HijackThis scans the locations in your computer system that may be modified by browser hijackers and fixes any problems found. Good tutorial on how to use it here and go to this site which analyses the log files.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit
Sophos Anti-Rootkit, finds and removes any rootkit that is hidden on your computer.

Free Anti-Virus Software

Microsoft Security Essentials
AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition
Avira AntiVir
ClamWin
Comodo Antivirus

Free Firewall Software

Comodo Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm
Jetico Personal Firewall
SoftPerfect Personal Firewall

Feel free to add any other tools which may be of use.

Just a quick Q. if you don't mind? I've run ad-aware and it picks up those little creepy crawlies and they get deleted but it doesn't explain why I keep getting the same hijack of my "Home" page setting. It's down as Yahoo but everyday resets to search-space.com and it's annoying me! Silly thing is - it says "Page not found" - you'd think a hijackers page would work!!

Have you tried the other tools Mr Dubby?

Read this it says it requires CWShredder to get rid of it.

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm#Coolwebsearch

Probably best you stop visiting those goat pr0n sites for a while.

Novice users should be aware that Spybot can in some circumstances cause operating system problems by deleting system files, dll's. Others have found problems eg, http://download.com.com/3302-8022_4-...html?pn=1&fb=2

re spybot - when it is running it says t the bottom

"123/12890" then next to this some text.

if i sit and watch it the text has got some well dodgy stuff like "XXX Dialer."

why does it not delete or flag these 12000 odd items - i just get a no problems found message.

what gives??

Geoggy - that is the dodgy stuff it is looking for, if you get no problems then you are fine!

You'll notice if you update the files, the number e.g 2/12037 will increase to 2/12800

Not sure if I was clear, those programs aren't actually on your PC (unless you get problems found), there are just on the reference list that the program uses.
