Le Mans 66

Honestly one of the best films I've seen in years. Absolutely fantastic

Saw this last week and really enjoyed it.

Didn't feel like 152 minutes either is always a good sign.

I really enjoyed it as well. likable underdog story, likable leads in Damon and Bale, exciting racing scenes, definitely worth watching on a fancy screen with bulked up audio.

I was distracted a bit by Bale and Balfe's completely disastrous accents, took me about 40mins to realise that they were both attempting Brummie! **** me do Americans not like me pointing this out over on Blu-ray.com though! I love it when Americans tell me what a West Midlands accent is supposed to sound like!

yep they were both terrible!! Could not get used to that at all, apart from that it was excellent.

Saw this last night, easily top 3 of my cinema viewings this year, possibly even number 1 if I could remember all of the other films that I've seen (go almost every week so see a lot).

Great story, great characters and acting, beautifully shot and had me in tears at the end.

Yeah, dodgy accents aside I have two gripes with the film, and I'll spoiler these:

They're not major issues though.

Here is US this is "Ford v Ferrari" as opposed for "Le Mans 66". I guess they thought no one would watch it unless you put Ford in the name?

I have not seen it but it is high on my list to watch. Heard good things.

Would be interesting to know what the original name was and which market it was changed for. As you say, maybe they thought calling it Le Mans '66 wouldn't mean anything to a lot of Americans.

Or they'd think it was subtitled.

Original title is Ford v Ferrari. They changed it to Le Mans 66 for European markets. I think it's a case that Ford is synonymous with the American Dream but to other countries it's just a family car manufacturer. On the flip side most people in Europe immediately know exactly what Le Mans but Americans don't.

IMDB says Ford v Ferrari

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1950186...=tt_dt_dt#akas

In Italy it is "Le Mans '66 - La grande sfida" - The Grand Challenge (I think that is how it translates)

That's exactly what I thought.

I'm pretty sure someone called in to the Kermode & Mayo show to say in this instance it came down to licensing and the use of trademarks, but that would be strange in this case?

It's probably a case of "America, **** yeah" whereas like you say, the rest of the world is probably more likely to know what it's about straight away by calling it Le Mans '66.

The different titles were because of trademark permissions in the UK.

Quote:
Why the different titles? “I made the mistake of not having a solid title when we were shooting, which I will not make again, because then it becomes this giant question mark for all of post-production,” says Mangold. “The title we landed on was Ford V Ferrari, but we found out you can’t use trademark names of companies in a title without their permission in the UK, and we weren’t prepared to screen the movie to get their mutual permission.”
https://www.screendaily.com/features...145611.article

I'm sure I heard an interview with Mangold where he said that besides getting their permission, they'd also have to give Ford & Ferrari a fairly hefty chunk of change to use the names over here, which they couldn't afford. In the end neither company had anything to do with the production of the movie at all.

Whatever the title, it's a great flick & deserves a lot more attention than it got on release.

What country wouldn't understand by the title that Ford is the racing underdog taking on the legendary racing pedigree of Ferrari, but they would know what Le Mans is?

probably also didn't want people to confuse it with the steve mcqueen film le mans...

Similarly why they call the first marvel avengers film avengers assemble in the UK because they didn't want any confusion.

edit - missed aprouts explanation - apologies.

It's not necessarily confusion, it's money. There is a netflix documentary on the making of Ghostbusters and the price they had to pay for the name, to the extent that they filmed two versions for the mostpart if they couldn't get the deal done.

Both titles work for me, in all honesty the Le Mans 66 title is a little more prescriptive.

I enjoyed the film a lot for what it was worth, for sake of historical accuracy I saw it with a Kiwi, who felt the need to lecture me that the other drivers were kiwis and were forgotten in the story.
