What anime series is this? (70's/80's)

I remember watching it when I was younger during the mid-80's, and it was an anime featuring giant robots. The hero piloted one of these giant robots which had different forms and during battles when he got damaged he would lose his current armour and be reduced to a smaller slightly different version (I think he had about 5 different shells/forms). Does anyone know what series this is, as it's been bugging me for years!

that sounds vaguely gundam, very vaguely (Gundam Victory has 3 or 4 parts and depending on what is damaged the pilot swaps them out/seperates)

any other details such as the forms/shells?

werewolf can you provide a link w/images to Gundam Victory? I'm only coming up with MSG Victory Gundam and that seems post 90's.

Did you see it on UK TV? There wasn't much around in the 80's. It doesn't sound like anyof the obvious stuff like Macross (roboteck).

No it was on vhs with a canto dub iirc :s

When I meant change form , I don't mean changing parts. It's a bit like those wooden russion dolls in that underneath the current form is a slightly smaller one. Each one being weaker, but faster than the last.
