Building Your Own Guitar

I just finished making my first guitar. I made it out of a cigar box, with a neck I bought cheap from ebay. I basically turned this...

Into this...

It took a few hours in the end as I know bugger all about building guitars, but it turned out alright I think. I sounds pretty decent too. I originally had a wooden bridge which I scrapped and also had to lower the tailpiece where the strings are threaded. I also had to build a reinforcement inside the box as the lid was sagging where I bolted the neck on. I used a double piezo pickup so it can be played acoustic or electric. I decorated the body with some old bits of crap I had to hide the small sound holes I drilled in it.

The only thing I've discovered is that the neck isn't a standard length, it's a bit longer than a strat or LP body and the frets are wider apart so I need to mess about with the intonation until I get it working perfectly.

Some pics of the build...

...and the back of it...

Thinking of making a three string next and make the neck myself. I bought a dulcimer stick and a three string slide a while back. Anyone else build instruments?

It's rotten! I've got it down to a pretty low action and thought o had it measured out quite well but I based the measurements on a strat and this neck is much longer and wider with wider frets. So ive ballsed that bit up but it actually plays superb as a slide guitar in open G as I have it tuned now so alls not lost.

That's pretty sweet. I wish I had the time and inclination to do something like that.

Nice job

Thanks folks

Honestly it's not too time consuming once you get going. I'm already starting another. I bought a nice shortbread tin so I'm going to make a Scotty-caster

Yeah been thinking about that. Just played it through my fender amp with a range of effects and it actually sounds bloody awesome! Must be a fluke. I did find on the ones I bought that if the sound holes are big then there's a lot of feedback with distortion pedals so I made them tiny. Seems to have worked because it can even handle my metal zone pedal at max distortion.

Sounds good to me Although I'm slightly more impressed that you got James Hetfield to play it

My wife says I look like him, luckily you can't see my shaved head though that would kill the illusion!

Nice R2D2 guitar

I made a guitar out of a shortbread tin at the weekend. What a pain in the arse it was. The tin was ultimately too thin and even with a tonne of re-inforcements in place it kept contorting when I was tightening the strings. It still plays but the box is so buckled and it doesn't keep tuning very well. Ah well I suppose it's a learning curve. Next time I'm making an oil can guitar so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks!

I was gonna pull the second one apart but my wife likes the look of it so it might just be a decoration.

Superb

I wonder if it's possible to make a guitar out of one of these..

Not sure how you'd utilize the flask though. Maybe just stick it over the headstock as decoration
