Couldn't agree more about the redundancy of the cropping arguments. The film was shot in Technovision 2.35:1 anamorphic, and this was how I saw it presented to stunning effect a couple of years back at my local multiplex (I was too young in '79 to see its original run). Therefore, this is how I want to see it on DVD. Call me pedantic if you like, but until 'Apocalypse Now' is presented in its proper aspect ratio on DVD it will remain glaringly absent from my bulging shelves.

Hmm, it is pretty much a dead cert that the film will be cropped and the set will be minus Hearts Of Darkness isn't it?

Apparently Coppola doesnt like the way he is portrayed on it.

Too right, the whole thing seemed staged, and he comes across as overly pretentious.

Storaro supervised BU's recent high-def remastering of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and that was at the full 2.35:1. I don't think it's impossible.

great news indeed about the possible extras for AN.

Could we see a music track only as well ?

All those Doors songs in the film were awesome, but I've never really seen the appeal of isolated score tracks. One's better off listening to a CD with the score on it IMO.

is hearts of darkness available on dvd anywhere? I have a 'double vhs' edition, with the documentary and the original cut of the movie... fascinating stuff... but obviously i'd prefer a nice dvd version.

has anyone seen the 4 hour workprint of the movie? I know its available on bootleg vhs and stuff, but after watching redux I couldn't bring myself to sit through an even longer version. (i'm not a fan of the redux cut, you might be able to tell)

How long is the documentary? I thought I'd seen it but I haven't.

I don't get music only tracks either, the soundtrack CD is much nicer to listen to.

"All those" being, well, one, my friend. With weird scenes inside the goldmine.

There's a "making of" on a Polish R2 2-disc set of Redux apparently, but I have no idea if it's Hearts of Darkness or not. I imagine not.

As much as you can possibly work out from this it looks like it's 15 minutes long:

http://www.merlin.com.pl/frontend/towar/348557
http://astabe.com/exec.1000/_item/id.5254

It looks very similar to the French 2 Disc SE which has:

• 1979 Cannes Press Conference (English) 3:23
• Claude Berri interview (French) 3:39
• 2001 Cannes Press Conference (mostly English) 45 min.
• Kurtz Compound (alt. ending) with or without commentary by Coppola (English) 5:48 - ALSO on the R1 and UK R2 otherwise bare-bones Theatrical Cut DVD.

It's a lovely Digi-pack set with removable French subs. Easily the definitive Redux right now.

DVD Beaver comparison. I'm not sure what's up with the screen captures though it looks nowhere near as bad as that on my TV:

Agreed they can be either really accurate or very much the opposite. It seems to be worse when the same person hasn't created all the captures.

That French DVD looks a mess no way does it reflect the actual DVD. I'd guess the captures are messed up in some way.

Well it mightn't matter much longer, as DVD Beaver is dying on its arse at the moment. It probably wont be around for much longer, unfortunatly.

I can't believe Coppola would chicken out over the ratio. So much for his 'auteur' vision.

re: hearts

speaking of the hearts documentary, i clearly remember a pal VHS double set with apocalypse on one tape and hearts of darkness on the other, so i guess francis must have had a change of heart since then.

But as someone else was asking, anyone know what the workprint is like? Trying to decide whether to download it...

I saw that double tape back on sale in MVC for £4.99 a few years back. I picked it up [I hadn't seen the documentary at that point] and thought, "Nah, there's no point. It'll be on DVD soon anyway I bet."
