Travel books about China

My dad has recently discovered Bill Bryson, and quite enjoys them.

For his birthday, I'd like to get him some similar style books about China if possible, as he travels there regularly with business. Any suggestions please?

I've not read my copy yet, but Sharks Fin & Sichuan Pepper by Fuschia Dunlop is supposed to be a good read. It's supposedly part travel book and part memoir. I'll also be interested to see what anyone else suggests.

Unfortunately, there only seems to be a DVD of the series (though that may be suitable - thanks for the suggestion.

What are you using on your amazon search? If I search for china and travel, I end up wading through endless rough guides.

Thanks for the help so far.

River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze and Red Dust have good scores so maybe a good place to start.

River Town is a very good book. It's not travel as such, as the guy stays in one town for two years, but it's extremely well-written - the author went on to write for The New Yorker and National Geographic I think.

If he's doing business then look for Mr China by Tim Clissold - that makes for a good read also.

Can't think of anything specifically Bryson in style - although I've long wished he'd come over and write one about the country.
