My book in the top 100 - Film News

Sorry to brag, but I've just rung all my friends and family and they're heartily sick of me.

My third novel, CHERUB: Maximum Security has just broken into the Hot 100 on Amazon.co.uk for the first time ever.

I feel like I'm in the scene in That'll Be The Day when David Essex's band first hits the charts...

My book!

(By the time anyone sees this i'll probably be back to 2,000th or something, but i was nice while it lasted)

Hopefully my ego will have returned to normal size by tomorrow.

84 at the moment so I saw it if nobody else did. Congratulations, think i might pick the first one up and see if I like it. Clicking on your name on Amazon it looks like you have a busy year ahead with a book every 6 months

Yeah, unless you're J K Rowling or John Grisham there are no embargos and your books just get put on the shelves as soon as they're printed. The only place I've seen it so far is the WH Smith at Kings X station, but it should be in more shops soon.

Play.com will do you you one for £4.49 delivered if you can't find it in the shops.

My copy is already on its way from Amazon.co.uk - I ordered it last week. So you have me (partially) to thank for your Amazon position.

I really enjoyed the first two, even though I don't think I'll ever forgive you for what you did to the Dreamcast in book 1. You rotten swine.

I don't expect you to go into detail, but roughly hot long does it take you to write a book and how profitable is it? Do you havea normal job and write on the side or is it now a full time job?

He talked about this a while back in the thread entitled Being an author (A good way not to make money...).

My books are around the 75,000 word mark. I usually take about 6 weeks to plan which takes me from original idea to a detailed chapter plan. Then the actual writing takes around 3 months (2.5 chapters per week).

Standard paperback royalties are 7.5% of cover price. Even less for discounted and overseas sales. This means that even a 50,000 copy paperback bestseller will only earn a writer around £20,000 (My first book has sold about half this number so far)

That's why overseas rights are massively important, because you effectively get paid again for a book you've already written. My first book is coming out in the USA, Germany, Russia and Thailand over the next 18 months or so. Hopefully more foreign rights will be sold in due course.

A friend of mine who also writes for children sells about 20,000 copies of his UK books, BUT he sells into 14 other terratories and probably earns £50-60,000 per book. Multiply that by two books a year and you're doing very nicely indeed!

At the moment it's still too early to quit my day job. Although the books are selling well and foreign advances mean I'm currently making a fair bit of money, there's no guaruantee that this will continue or that the books will do well when they are released.

Obviously, the USA is the big one. I'm gonna be watching the sales figures anxiously this October when my first two books come out over there!

Does your publisher send you overseas to promote your book at signings, etc?

Yes, I'll give you an address if you e-mail me mail@cherubcampus.com

I sold quite a few copies of the first book to forum members. I asked Colin P if it was OK and he was great about it!

I'll have to pay the forum back at some point, maybe donate a dozen books to the Christmas charity drive or something.

On shelves at Ottakars in Meadowhall so I've got myself a copy now.. Keep an eye out for my 12p contribution to your royalties..
