[Netflix] Designated Survivor

I could not see another thread for this Netflix Special series and so thought that I'd start one.

I passed this by a few times in the past month but with nothing better to do this weekend just gone, I started to see this series on Netflix. In the next 24 hours I sat and saw all the 7 episodes thus far released and can't wait for the next one. It is a political thriller like 24 but will a less confusing timespan. Keifer Sutherland is at it again, this time with the job of POTUS enforced upon him due to circumstances and a terrorist bomb. It is very fast moving with several plot twists and so far has been very very watchable. I highly recommend the show to anyone with Netflix access.

It's mentioned in the big Netflix/Amazon thread but yes, I intend to check it out shortly. In an age of instant gratification though, my wife won't accept weekly episodes and is waiting for it all to be available (despite me mentioning that it'll take us weeks and weeks to catch up anyway!).

Will deffo be checking it out.

I've also been enjoying it. Lots of reminders of 24 of course, but KS is doing a good job. The big question, of course, is who is playing it straight and who is part of the conspiracy. Enjoying it for the mystery more than anything.

Was a bit annoyed at the last episode. It's the usual situation: person A has crucial information that will help person B but just as they are about to tell them, something happens meaning it's put off. Hate that when it happens. Which is why I don't watch soaps any longer!

IMO, Congressman McLiesh is a red herring. I have a feeling that I know who's behind the plot.

Very entertaining so far. Like all the red herrings. KS is good at this stuff. Good supporting cast too. Great pic quality.

Enjoying it for what it is, I'm really not sure West Wing meets CSI meets 24 really works but it's got a good cast and is watchable. I just wonder about how long they can make the premise last.

I like the weekly release on Netflix although I have to admit I don't love this show enough to watch it weekly like I did with Better Call Saul. It's sort of nice to think it's "some show" night a lot of which is lost when I stream pretty much all my stuff.

Invariably, when I'm checking for what's available it's always 'later today' grrrr.

As for speculation on the plot....

Eventually, I'll learn all their names

I really like it apart from it seeming to be heading down the 24 plot twist route of "aha - (s)he's the baddie" - "Oh no - (s)he's just a puppet for the REAL baddie" (repeat ad-infinitum)

Damn it!

I'd guess it was a series of people pulling strings in the background who we don't know yet

Also mentioned a few times in the New Shows for 2016/17 thread.

FYI - it's not a 'Netflix' show, it's being broadcast on ABC in the US. I guess Netflix just picked up the rights to show it over here.

Gave up on it halfway through episode 3. I liked the whodunnit aspect, but the rest of it irritated me.

Could be, but if the bad guys stay in the 'background' of the story arc for too long, then the ultimate revelation loses its impact.

For some reason I'm envisioning a Prison Break story arc, if the reveal is soon, where is the series then going to go? A simple West Wing knock off as he tries to get elected?

A relatively early reveal is a definite possibility and after that the onus of the story arc will probably shift to Kirkman's ongoing Presidency. But I do think that it will level out like West Wing. There will be other subplots and shenanigans and in the end Kirkman will win the next election on his own merit, probably running against Kimble Hookstraten.

I wonder how that name got approved in the writers' room. I usually have time to go and make a cup of tea by the time a character has gotten to grips with delivering the line "Congresswoman Kimble Hookstraten".

The latest episode #10 was a cracker, as was the one before. The plot is really developing even though it is probably implausible in reality even in the USA.

McLeish is very likely being groomed to be a puppet President after the plotters get rid of Kirkman. Never liked Maggie Q before but she is good in this one.

Have really enjoyed this. Though it was 24/House of Cards Lite to start with (we even had a Dammit and a Son of a Bitch) but its ramped up the action and plot in the last couple of episodes. Great finale. Looking forward to S2.

EDIT: thought it was the finale as no other eps listed on Netflix but could be due to Christmas break. Wikipedia says 22 episodes this season, back in March 2017 for the rest.
