While it very much copies a lot of TNG, I wouldn't say its a shot for shot remake of next gen. I think its just different enough to avoid the lawyers

I do recall an interview where one of the execs said they had lawyers on the set all the time advising what they could put could not do.

I mean it's about a ship with a crew exploring the galaxy. How many medical dramas are there where the staff save lives?

Not been that impressed with any of the first three episodes so far. First one was just a dull soap opera. Second episode had some great FX & the subject matter was "unique" to say the least!

Third episode had a couple of good moments but sad to see one of the more interesting characters leave the show. (And if it is for the obvious reason, I'm not amused!!)

Presumably because you're allowed to fly a spaceship around space. I'd also guess than even in the 60's when Star Trek first came out. Flying round in a spaceship wasn't that original a concept.

Not watched the second series yet, seems they've gone with the focus groups, less laughs and more like Star Trek.

Nope it's still incredibly funny with lots of jokes.

Yes, but there's a huge difference between making a show about 'flying a spaceship around space' and making a show so similar to TNG right down to the sets, costumes & general aesthetics, they could have quite easily called it Star Trek: The Next Next Generation & nobody would have blinked an eye...

Must say. .. it is not gripping me as much as the first season. If it is going all TNG then that probably explains it; I hated TNG.

What's happened to the new science officer(?) they made a point of introducing in episode 1 and hasn't been seen since? Or maybe they are saving that for later in the series

I’m being cryptic to avoid potential spoilers

However the broadcast ep 1 wasn’t going to be the actual ep 1.

And the rest....

Just watched the first ep, absolutely awful, just an hour of relationship drama with no sf. Thought this was meant to be a SF show, trappings like a rhino bar man just doesn't work for me (or a pastiche of Amok Time).

Worryingly, I knew immediately what the title of Episode 4 was from (before even watching the episode)

The Orville - Seth MacFarlane's Star Trek homage/comedy

No spoilers but boy the science errors in ep 5 were HUGE, so big you wonder why they solved the issue that way

Episode 3:
Very sad to see Alara go, but that was a great episode. We had two Trek actors (doctors!) working together and both stealing the episode. John Billingsly was able to really turn the tables and go surprisingly sinister when his intentions were revealed!

Also loved the depiction of high gravity on Seleya.

Any Halston Sage (Alara) fans might want to know she popped up on the rebooted Magnum PI last week. With a bit of luck it'll be a recurring role.

I thought it sounded dodgy and then they showed it and it looked even dodgier!

Would've been easy with transporters. Not sure I'd have shown the captain's restraint in that situation when confronted by a bunch of nutbags.

ep4 was ok but they really didn't build up the story, she appears in ep 1 then never seen again.

Interesting that they directly copied a storyline from

Really enjoyed the episode, though.
